Sockless detritus free sump

You can also avoid the sock and still have a clean sump by just putting a small pump in your sump basin and leave it running all the time. The pump creates a current in the sump area that keeps the debris suspended until the skimmer catches the stuff. It's simple, inexpensive, and works wonderfully for me.

Unless the skimmer DOESN'T catch it (and it won't catch everything), in which case it gets returned to the display and buried in the rock/sand.

Someone from this board has added a settling tank that seems to trap these particle. I can't remember in which thread it was.

This thread inspired me to make a small settling tank in line before my fuge. It will just be a small 2.5gal tank (just got home with it) some egg crate layed in the bottom to work like a sloose box for separating gold and rock from water and I'm going to drill the side of it so it will flow out into the sump. Should have it all done for under $25 and some spare parts. The plan is that it won't be hard plumed into the system so I can simply remove the tank, syphon off the majority of the water and rince the traped slug out of the bottom. Ill add baffling if and where I need it once its up and running. Once i get the rest of the odds and ends ill post a build thread for a sediment trap.

I do not have filter socks. I have a filter matt but a lot gets by it. I have not cleaned my smp in 10 years and have great parameters.

Saltydrip, a settling tank sounds much easier to setup, congrats on the addon! For the running tanks this is a much easier setup. In my case I'm planning ahead on my next build, I'll probably build an acrylic collector like the solid collector shown above.

Mr. Demeanor, how do you keep or clean? Or do you just let it be?

I just let it be. When I add water it stirs some up and the corals eat.

I started my tank running a Fluval FX5 canister. I had it packed with rubble and the fluval bio rings (I forget the name). Since removing the canister I dumped all the bio media in the pump area of my fuge. Every so often I stir it up and "feed" the tank. That's all natural stuff growing in the fuge. I do often clean/blow off my live rock. I would like to remove some of that waste if possible. Plus I'm feeding more now and would like to remove what doesn't get eaten.
