Softies, LPS and SPS together?

What are everyones thoughts on mixed reef? I just started getting into SPS but am still deciding on whether to go SPS dominant. I read that leathers can inhibit SPS growth. Has anyone seen this? I do like my hammer and torch coral, could I go LPS and SPS and rid myself of softies or doesn't it matter? As you can tell, I'm still learning and confused!

I have a 90 mixed reef and love it, it is mostly LPS with a good ammount of SPS, softies and zoas.

I've done it both ways. Personally I think the best thing to do if you are new to SPS is just start with SPS only. Learn how to maintain a solid SPS tank. Then you can add back in the other things if you feel your tank is lacking..

Softies for me are more problematic then LPS. They tend to grow out of control and over run things.

Things like Torch, Hammer, Frogspawn are pretty easy manage since you can judge their reach easily.

That sounds like a good idea. There is a thread in the Advanced Topics forum titled "the secret to colorful, healthy corals....obvious to some, elusive to many" that basically makes it sound like if you keep softies with SPS you must be a noob and not know anything.

sps dominate.......Have all the above and even a leather. No issues. Run a little rox.08 swapped every 3 weeks

Thanks for replies. There is one ledge I really want to put an acro but my zoas are starting to encroach. What is the best way to stop they're spreading?

I have zoas encroach around the bases of my sps and I just let they go. They haven't grown up any of the sps, just grow around the bases and continue along the rocks. I like the look and all the coral seems happy.
