Solana tank owner thread.

Can anyone tell me what pre-filter media they use?

Ive purchased 2 different kinds, and each one slows the flow too much (causing my pump to flood the display tank)... PLEASE HELP!!!!

I used the fluval foam blocks but be careful because even those will clog up and flood the tank. I had to change mine out at least once a week.

I tried just about all of the packaged stuff and all caused back up issues. Finally I found some heavy duty coarse material my LFS sells for pond filters. I can go a week or two without any issue. Stuff is cheap enough I just toss it and cut a new piece.

The new bulbs are great. I had one go bad and Nano Tuners shipped a replacement out right away. Color is nice... too soon to tell on growth.

Is anyone vodka dosing their solana? If so how much is you daily dose?

I don't vodka dose but I know the actual amount that you dose is related to the amount of consumption you have by SPS. So everyone will dose a bit differently. Personally I would not dose something so powerful in that small of a system. Not much room for error, but it is something to look into for sure. Hopefully someone else could give you their 2 cents.

I try and keep it level with the lip thats there for the top-off bottles... which makes it pretty even all the way across.

Please forgive me as I'm sure this has already been asked a few times in this massive thread I'm trying to decide between an MP10 or MP20 for my Solana. Planning on mostly sps on the rockwork with lps and zoas low in the tank. Anybody use a single MP10 and wish they got the MP20? Or vice versa? Thanks in advance.

I started with an MP10 on my SPS solana but as they grew and filled up the water column I added a second MP10. IMO one mp10 is not enough flow for an SPS solana, but I like the additional flow coming from a second pump.

HTH

The MP20 was a great pump. I downgraded to an MP10 because I have little to no SPS in my tank. It all depends on your flow requirements.

I have an MP20 in my Solana and love the flow it gives. My tank is now mostly SPS and things really thrive with the flow the MP20 provides. I have not used the MP10, but thought that I would rather err on the side of caution. I was worried that if I got the MP10 I would later decide to upgrade to the MP20, needlessly spending another $400.

I think two 10's would be nice in an SPS tank. I don't have a lot of sps's now, but do have just 1 MP10 and I'm not sure it would be enough flow. There are definitely some dead spots in my tank, and I have it turned up 100%.

Guess I can jump in on this thread, I've picked up a used 34g Solana Starphire tank.

Here is a quick dirty pic of how it sat a few days ago, since then I've been just re-wiring stuff and hung the light. I want to try to hide as much as I can. I've got a rock wall that I built for it currently curing so in a few weeks when that is done I'll rescape the tank.

The equipment is 2 tunze 6025s (soon to be moded), a 150w Sun pod (which I'm thinking of replacing with something that has supplemental lights as well), a maxi jet 600 for the return, and the stock skimmer (which I may replace in the future). I have ACJr that will control the lights, heat, and dosing, and a jbj ato for the top off. That I hope to get installed today.

FIGURED IT OUT!!!
Filter/Pre-filter causing displaytank to overflow

You have to push the filter below the overflow grates so that water fall on it. I have it about 2 inches below the overflow. When I kept the filter ON the overflow it caused my display tank to overflow (not enough water coming through)

Fluval 404/405 works great aswell.... You get 4 sponges out of the 2 pack (have to cut them in half)

I'm not dosing vodka yet, but I will. I have in the past on other systems. Whats nice a bout a small system is if you botch if up your a quick 10 gallon water change from fixing everything. Much nicer then trying to fix a botched up large tank.

I would question the use of the egg-crate on your solana. Most times people use eggcrate to balance the load on the glass, but the solana glass sits on the floor, so there shouldnt be a worry about pressure.

I cant see the benefit..

If your about to add sand you might have alot of dead spots..

But i would get a second opinion from someone who has done this hobby for longer
