Solana tank owner thread.

Domino

Just finished your thread and found out that it was a domino clown :)
I read that Springer Dotty's are the least aggressive. Is this true?

Too bad we don't get much ORA stuff up here, but then again I do live in Canada's 'coral mecca' so I don't have many complaints in that regard.

Now that you've had the LED's a few days have you noticed any colour loss on your corals? I've got a cheapo blue LED fixture for actinic purposes but have a vertex illumilux incoming.

I'll shoot the tank today and post some updated pics as I've added a few more SPS colonies. Getting the yellow wrasse out and will put a more appropriate one in it's place, probably a sixline. Any suggestions for fish since it's just the clowns?

Battling high alk right now, so the trick for me is to lower it gradually without stressing out the acros. Picked up a nice encrusting monti that was a touch bleached for $10 yeseterday too.

Can't say enough about this SWC HOT mini though. Love it!

I think I read the same thing about the Springer Dotty's.

As for additions to your clowns; I had 2 of the same clowns, a six line, and coral beauty and they got along great. They even decided to jump at the same time. (six line and 1 clown).

I'm actually trying to boost my ALK slowly at this time.

I'm staying away from dwarf angels as I don't want any SPS polyp nipping. I'm also staying away from ANY shrimp as they tend to rob my lps of mysis shrimp whenever I feed em. Just acro crabs for me! Maybe an anemone shrimp or a sexy shrimp once I get fully stocked and feel the itch to add something.

I AM considering some firefish gobies (2-3) (red as opposed to purple- we get enough purple in our tanks) and a six or an eight line wrasse once the yellow finds a new home. I still feel like I'm missing one more fish to balance the bioload I want (aka the amount of fish poop I want to feed my coral lol)

I'm having a BIGTIME micro bubble issue coming from the return right now.I've got sponge filter in the return as was recommended previously in this thread, and I plan on removing the stock return tomorrow to recheck and clean all the seals. I sure hope this solves the problem. I'm tempted to install some baffles in chamber one in the back since I have it opened up with nothing but carbon inside it.

How are you dealing with your ALK levels? I'm doing a 5 gal w/c every few days after I temp adjust, as well as add Ca and Mg until they line up with existing params. Can't wait to get my alk in check so I can get my limewater resevoir up and running.

Here's FTS from today

All the fish are apparently camera shy (or full lol)

I'm still experiencing micro bubbles so since I've got chamber one empty, I'm going to attempt baffles between chambers one and two much like your standard sump on a larger tank.

Here's the idea:

Thoughts?

You have some nice corals. Sorry to hear about the microbubbles.

For me I have my back chamber setup as such:
skimmer and heater in chamber 1,
media basket (floss/puregen & Phosban/chemipure) chamber 2
return, temp and ph probe, and ground in chamber 3.

Once I go topless again (week or so after adding next fish) I'll having my ATO going in chamber 3 as well.

hmm

Thanks for the info Cali- I can't setup a media basket due to the skimmer intake bing in chamber two. Otherwise I'd be all over that!

Thanks for the corals comment- still a new ish tank so colours aren't where they could be just yet. Still dialing in my levels, but I think to deal with N and P I'm going to attempt the biopellets. I also bought what I thought was an encrusting monti but it turns out to be an encrusting goniopora! Almost lost my PPE's figuring this out. :uzi: I also can't wait to chop that big brain in half as I split on it with a fellow reefer. It's too big to look good in there. Thankfully it's a slow grower.

I set up my dad's solana tank. He was using 2 Koralia Nano pumps that are terrible. I put an old Tunz 6025 nanostream and that is 1000x better than the two Koralia. I had an MP40ESw on my old tank and loved it. Was thinking about a MP10 but could use the money for other upgrades. You know new skimmer, InTank stuff.

Anyway I was wondering what wavermakers other Solana users where using.

Drouner I was using to JBJ OceanStream (500 gph each) hooked up to my RKL controller. It was OK, but the powerheads were bulky and an eye sore.

Once I made the jump to an MP10 I noticed a huge difference. The only downfall is my MP10 is noiser than my JBJ's.

Here's mine. Cycling, lights just on for the photo.

The koralia 750 will be replaced with an MP10wes that I have on my other tank.
Stock skimmer. Stock return pump.

Also planning on picking up a Tunze osmolator in the next few days for top off.

Anyone experiencing larger snails temp covering overflow teeth which drops sump water level?
I just put a Tunze Osmolator in and when a snails goes over teeth the sump level drops and the Tunze kicks on adding fresh water and when the snail leaves the teeth the water level jumps back up increasing the water level too high setting off the high alarm.
And resolutions or ideas?

can someone post pics of diy covers for the 34 solana? I would like to switch out the stock glass with something that will let the tank cool a little more. Thanks

I've lost a handful of fish from jumping (six line wrasse, assessor, even a clown when I had stray voltage). I've used the glasstop for a few weeks in fear of my ORA clowns doing something dumb. With summer coming up and no chiller the top is off.

I like a the look of this one;

but would like it clear and fully covering the back two corners. My assessor always hung out in the back left corner and once i removed the glass top last week, that is exactly where he jumped from.

My Solana going on it's 3rd month... Nothing major, disco ball light, octopus skimmer hob, mp10, k2, ato, 3 part dosing(by hand), and using mb7 and biofuel to control nutrients along with active carbon in a 2LF rx.

Johnic & Johnnie1960,

I have a similar issue, which is why I haven't setup my ATO yet. Basically after a day or so the sponge gets clogged up and restricts flow:

Has anyone found a good solution to this issue?
