Solaris Led lighting systems

Cindy, thanks for being patient and sticking with the thread. Do you have any electric bill impact info yet? I am curious to know if it really saves the $200 you mentioned earlier. That would be really good. I am an LPS keeper, so I don't need crazy lights like the SPS crowd. I currently use T5s. I wonder how they would compare in light and heat to them. Hopefully I don't start another theoretical argument.

My tank is 6 feet wide, but has a custom canopy on top of it. This means that I can't put a 72" wide fixture inside of it.

I spoke with PFO about that and they said..."Wait...we'll have something for you soon."

PFO needs to address the bank over center brace issue, IMO.

Looking at the pic, there doesn't appear to be any bank of leds over the midline...

I put a 20k version on my tank last night; it arrived intact and working - at first I did not put the feet on, but did later and it appears brighter after having done so. It is very quiet compared to my tem adjusted icecap fans in my aquaactince fixture

before 20k 250 times 2 untouched and like so many this is bluer/dimmer than i see with my eyes which is the same as the solaris below - this fixture was not on feet about 2.5 inches off the water -

btw - the first shot was taken jul 12 2006 - notice the growth especially the monti under 20k mh

No electric bill yet. I'll post as soon as it comes in. I can say I've seen a huge reduction of algae. I haven't had to wipe the sides down in over a week. :D

Question I am wondering if this is a good thing. What about the zooanthellea in the corals? Cindy you are taking great pictures can not wait to see progress over a 6 month period of time. Maybe same coral every month.
Great looking tank

Cindy you do have a great looking tank.
You mentioned your mushrooms looked funny last time. How are they looking now?

20k 36" Solaris

20k 36" Solaris

I got the hood last week. I got the last one available in North America from JL aquatics in Canada. I'm very happy with the purchase. It does the sparklies in the sand and on the ceiling like a Metal Halide setup. This is over my custom 95 gallon Acrylic. I have newer photos since the sand has settled. The photos were taken right after I added substrate. See link at bottom.

This is my dream tank. I built the stand to be higher than a regular stand. I don't like looking down into a reef. All 3 sides have panels that are held in place by magnets. The come off for easy maintenance. I'm moving from a 120 Gallon All-Glass to this setup. I have an EcoSystem sump that will be moved to this setup along with the EV180 Skimmer. I just added a Vortec Propeller pump with battery backup. Back on subject... I LOVE the solaris. It runs a heck of a lot cooler than the dual 10k 400 watt halides over my 120. I like the light for every reason. The built in controller is awesome. The construction is solid. The power supplies are not in the hood which helps keep the tank even cooler. Business has been good for me this year, so I was able to buy the expensive goodies for this tank.

You know, thats one of the first suggestions I make when someone has a cyano or algae problem... to change the bulbs to a bluer spectrum. It works for me every time.... and nobody believes me. Algaes like red light (many cyanos like IR that older daylight bulbs seem to give off more and more of as they get older), and so taking it away really helps.

Re: 20k 36" Solaris

yours looks brighter than mine looking at the bulbs themselves - but cameras can be on different settings - the baffling part is that your images says it was created in 2005 - maybe you had to reset your camera time.

Thanks, Mushrooms are about the same. Had a Ricordia disappear overnight. Some Zoo's are doing great others are not looking so good. Also had some things knocked over. It's strange because I don't have any big snails and have not added anything to my tank in a few months

Wow cool thread I read the whole thing (wish I would of skipped to the last two pages but hey that reef central). To me it looks more blue than I would like but that's just my opinion. I just put 14K in my 250 watt DE fixtures and I don't know if I would like it any bluer but like it was said before cameras do strange things when it come to blue light. I am really thinking hard about getting one of these can't wait to see how much different your electric bill is. Mine went up quite a bit when I upgraded to my 180 but I did add a large pump for the closed loop. Anyways glad to see all of you that got one like it and keep the updates coming.

Thanks

Energy bill plunges, from $364 to $297.

Energy bill plunges, from $364 to $297.

We've all wondered about PFO's claim of energy savings of 40% over equivalent MHs. Here's some proof that the Solaris saves energy.

I receive my electric bill via e-mail on the 21st of each month. My September electric bill was $364 for the previous month. I placed the Solaris into operation on September 27th. I just received my October bill. It is $297. If all other things remained equal that's a significant savings considering it is for a 24 day period of running the Solaris. I'm impressed and happy.

On a 30 day cycle this should compute to about an $80 savings per month. This is exciting. I think I'll go out and treat myself. Oh wait a minute, I treated myself yesterday. Oh what the hey, I'll treat myself again. After all this reefing hobby is all about self indulgence anyway, isn't it? Like, anything goes for our corals, right? :D
