Sorry about the flame angel.
Yeah, I always hate losing fish.

I dont think it was uronema, there were none of the classic signs like flashing and color loss.

Although if it was uronema, I'm going to be treating my tank with copper or hypo again... sigh. I think I'm OK though.

I was gone this weekend, could've been my blue line...
How did he get all the way up here to Alaska to bite my little flame?

What do you guys think about adding a couple anthias to my mix?

Pros - Another neat schooling fish and it would add some more movement without being a "scary" type of fish that causes others to not come out and eat or just hide in the rocks.

Cons - My system is pretty well stocked, 5 or 6 anthias might push it over the limit? Although they dont need large meals, so I dont think it would be a problem. Another con, they will just simply cut down on available swimming space. It would be another group of fish swimming through the water. And my last con, right now my tank is doing well, no signs of disease at all. I'd hate to add anthias and then start having problems. I'm hesitant to quarantine anthias, I know they need some good room to swim or they will start picking each other off.

I'm debating it, I'll probably decide not too but if anyone has any compelling insights to this idea, let me know :)

Don't know enough about anthias...never had one believe it or not. They are pretty, but seem more reefy than FO. Curious to see one with experience's input. They are very pretty.

I've had anthias before in my reef. They actually should just do fine in my type of FOWLR. If I had a 300g+ tank I'd do it in a heartbeat, I'm more just concerned about running out of room at this point.

They are pretty neat, they add some nice movement to the aquarium. I'm really enjoying all the little flames and convicts, I'm thinking anthias would be great in there too.

Even so I'm in gambling business i will not take that bet with the Anthias.
Your tank looks very good with no signs of disease why risk it ?
I think you just need to sit back and enjoy /feed your fish get them fat and big
I will get a new big skimmer first to keep up with all the fish load you have now and more later.

Yeah, it's really tempting to add more fish, especially small ones, I dont want any more big ones. At the same time, it's really nice having a good harmony going and no problems.

Although I dont know about the flame angel harem thing. I think I'm going to lose another flame angel within a day or two. It wasnt swimming around at lunch time when I fed the tank which is very odd, they normally are all zipping through the pellet stream.

I looked around the tank and then he came out from a corner and started eating pellets. He is just swimming a little weird and looks beat up, but not really beat up, more just like he isnt feeling good. His fins arent really sticking out like normal and he isnt swimming as good as he should be. He is eating though and eating a lot. He started swimming with the other flames and chasing them a little bit, so he cant be feeling too horrible. I just have a bad feeling looking at him like he might kick the bucket soon.

If I did this again, I'd be sure to get only one male and 3+ females, I'm pretty sure I ended up with 4 males and one female and it just isnt the way it should work.

Time will tell.

I've never actually put cuprisorb in, I just am running huge amounts of activated carbon. Once that stuff wears out, I'm going to put in the small bag of cupri.

That's interesting. I am regenerating mine for the second time tonight. Both 100 ml bags only turned just a very light mint green color. After the acid bath, the balls are a brown color, so I am going to soak them in bleach, as per the instructions for Purigen. The Cuprisorb apparently sucked up more than just the copper.

Anyone have any ideas what this could be? Something is going on with my little flame. Actually this is one of the ones I thought was a male, there are two smaller in the tank and one about the same size as this guy.

It is odd, it isnt as if he is being attacked and his fins are totally nipped off, instead it is just like the colored area is leaving the fins but the more solid, cartilage part is still there.

Also, he just doesnt look good. Whitish spots around his pectoral fins which is just not normal.

I dont see a spot of ich on anyone in the tank and no other problems I can think of. Every other fish looks to be doing fine in the tank, only this guy is having a hard time.

For reference, here is what one of my healthy little flames looks like. I took these just 5 minutes ago while I was trying to capture a shot of the sick one.

Notice how the fins look great. Maybe a little nip out of the top unpaired fin, but otherwise real good.

Colors are good and clean and solid through the whole body of all my fish but the one flame.

Any advice? Anyone know what is going on?

Salinity is rock solid at 1.025. Ammonia is 0. I didnt check nitrites but I've never had a problem with them. Nitrates are around 40-60. Copper is unmeasurable. pH is ranging from 8.08 at night to 8.15 during the day. Temperature is rock solid now at 77.5, however, we had a heat wave up here the last week and my tank stayed right aruond 80 degrees all week. It never quite hit 80, but it got real close, like 79.8 for 4 days straight and it only cooled down about half a degree at night.

For what it's worth, he is still eating at every meal.

Anyway, hit me up with your ideas please! I'd hate to lose the little guy.

I hope is just bit marks Recty, i think the other flames are attacking the weak one they don't have strong bit like triggers they just scrape the surface of the tail and back fins, as you see very minimum damage to the front of the fish .
Can you catch the angel and put him in the sump?
Man i hope it don't get infected.

He would be near impossible to catch right now... I have so many hiding spots, I'd have to remove most of my rock which I'm not willing to do right now with the fish not facing certain death quite yet.

I'm doing a big water change right now, around 75g which is a 35% water change or so.

Well ok .....You think is water quality problem ?
The only think close to the picture you show above is a overdose of formaline i saw once but it was more like disintegration of the tip of the fins .
Can you set a video camera and live the room to see if they gang up on the flame.

I dont think it's water quality, I checked all my parameters today and they all look good, plus everyone else is doing good.

But I typically find it never hurts to do a water change :) All it costs is a little money and it solves a lot of problems, so I'm doing it.

I can watch the angels chase each other around from time to time, there are really only two big ones and one of them is the one that looks bad in the picture and the other is the one that looks good in the picture. I think the one that looks like he is in good shape is just winning the dominance "battle" so to speak. I probably do need to catch the other guy out.

I've heard of other dwarf angel species reverting back to females in the presence of a real dominating male, I'm hoping mine will do that, or they will have their battle of wills and then decide there is a winner and stop fighting.

I hope they will.
I never had any luck with them in harem or in the reef they are to distractive more than a large angel if you asked me.
But a beautiful fish.

Yeah, I hope they calm down too.

Unfortunately, they seem to be able to do a lot of damage fast, if that is what this is. He looked great yesterday and today looks like he has one foot in the grave.

He might have got picked on all last night? That would explain the damage. If that is the case, I hope he is alive tomorrow.

The weird thing is he isnt giving in, really. The male who seems to be in charge is chasing him around, then stops, and the one with the messed up fins comes right back up into his face, like he is challenging him, and the chase resumes.

He is either incredibly stupid, or incredibly brave... both of which are probably going to get him killed.
