Some reef fish photos snorkling off the Big Island

small alien

The fungus is among us.
Greetings friends. I'm no photographer, but I wanted to share a few shots I took on my first snorkling trip. We were on the West side of Hawaii and I was in a little protected cove just along the shore. It changed the way I look at our charges forever and was one of the best experiences of my life. So, without further ado.

AWESOME!!

it must be exciting watching these gorgeous fishes swimming underneath you! the achilles tangs are stunning!!

that turtle looked like it was having fun.

i can think of at least 10 fun poses you could have done with the turtle!!! one of them includes a tea cup and fine china.

Indeed. The shot of the Achilles doesn't do justice to what I saw. I came around a rock and there was a two foot wide vertical crack down through the whole thing and in it was about 20 Achilles about 10 feet away from me. The shot is just the last few exiting. The most beautiful tang for my money. A very special sight.

The most memorable sight I had I did not photograph. It was on my last day. I came around a boulder and there was a beam of sunlight shining into a kind of cave under the edge of the boulder and in the sunbeam were a pair of Hawaiian cleaner wrasses cleaning a Moorish Idol. All three just absolutely radiant in the natural sunlight. Amazing.

Cheers.

According to authorities, in spite of the aesthetic appeal, that is super not allowed.:spin2:

ahhh hawaiian cleaners! L. phthirophagus. my fav species of labroides but cannot keep alive and it's been a looong time since i saw one in real life. although i've only seen those that were brought in the trade only destined to die.

i would like to see on in the wild in future. i hope to visit hawaii one day and see some beautiful fishes.

by any chance did you manage to see some melanistic longnose butterflies?

I did not. I don't know my butterflies too well. I saw the species in the photo above as well as raccoons and another species, maybe "Saddleback"? No longnose.

Just for fun, I thought I'd try to remember all the fish I saw. Should have written them down. I'm sure I'm missing plenty. Let's see.

The 3 species of Butterfly.

Tangs:
Yellow
Achilles
Vlamingi
Sailfin
Naso
Kole
Convict
another bristletooth species
Orange Shoulder (beautiful and HUGE!!!)

Triggers:
The black species photographed above with the light blue lines running along the doral and anal fins.
Humu humu

Wrasses:
Hawaiin cleaner pair
the Thalassoma sp. pictured above
some little green species in many sizes
both juvi and adult Coris gaimard
both juvi and adult Green bird wrasse
3 stages of Parrot fishes

Damsels:
Just a couple of Dascylus spp.

The yellow trumpet fish pictured above. It was about 3' long!

A male Whitley's boxfish. I followed it for some time. So beautiful.

Some kind of little toby puffer.

Moorish Idol

A moray eel of some kind.

Some kind of filefish. About 5 inches long.

A 2' octopus which I was go from coral head to coral head. While swimming, it was red. When is would perch by the coral, it would totally camouflage, also changing its skin texture dramatically. I followed it for about 5 minutes and saw this camouflaging about 5 times. So neat!

Urchins:
Pencil
Long spine
another small species

Mostly just Pocillopora spp. coral.

And green sea turtles.

No gobies, anthias, chromis. There wasn't much cover in the terrain. Mostly just bigger fish and the damsels that would dash into the Poci.

I only took the point and shoot out for one swim. Next time, I'll do more as it's very fun to see the photos now.

Cheers.

Sounds like you need to get certified. Scuba is great fun, and highly symbiotic with our aquarium hobby.

aaaaah thanks. did the big island back in 1993..right off the beach all i could see was all the stuff i wanted to put in my tank:rollface:..glad for you enjoy..also ran into a pod of dolphins on the dive who surrounded us and seemed to be talking to us. really, really cool thing.there are no words for how cool that was...also caught a marlin...it was a great trip and a very cool place...stayed at the ritz..very cool drink called the "lava flow"..and the company paid for it..all...only disappointment, the authentic pig cooked in the sand, palm leaves thing. it really needed some eastern nc bbq sauce:rollface:
