Something attached to starfish

I've had this red starfish for a few weeks now and something just showed up on it in the past day or so. I can't tell if it is attached or something busting out from the inside. Any ideas?

It looks like a gaping wound and/or rotting flesh to me. Is it missing a leg? That looks like the spot where a 5th leg would have been?

They do grow them back... if they are otherwise healthy. But that's a tough call if it's only been in your tank for a few weeks.

I just realized the pic does make it look like a leg is missing, but they are all there. You can see all five here.
