I just added him into the tank about a week ago. None of the other fish are sick looking at all, everything seems to be doing fine except this one fish.

He swims around normally with the others, and has a hearty appetite as well. Does not demonstrate sick behavior, but there is something obviously wrong, particularly around the mouth.

These are the best photos I could take. It looks like his mouth is decaying. The rest of him seems to okay, with the exception of two, fairly small and flat white spots on his tail fin.

Is he actually sick or is he getting picked on when I'm not around? Any advice is appreciated, thanks.

NOT in your main tank. QT. I agree with Steven. This is bacterial...they can look absolutely gruesome and heal up fine in short order if you get the right antibiotic.

Right, well, the thing is... I don't have a quarantine tank. Bad reefkeeper, I know.

My friend is coming back from vacation in two days and she has a 3 g tank she wants to give me that I was going to use as a QT. Can this wait two days? He's acting perfectly normal, but looks absolutely disturbing. Like his lower jaw is rotting.

Does anyone know what is actually going on with this fish, and if there's a good chance it will spread? The other fish look completely fine.

This looks a lot like what killed my Potters Angel:( It was injured by the guy at the LFS when he netted it.
It was eating great, two weeks went by and all of the sudden he looked as if his mouth had exploded!
He was in a cycled qt so I began treating him for a bacterial infection with Furan-2 [I used a stronger dose than what the label read-went by Noga's book] This did not help..I went through a couple of other antibiotics and also Furanese [sp?] which would have covered both bacterial infections and fungal infections [very rare] but nothing worked and he couldn't eat:(

Yours could have also been caused by and injury to the mouth, you never know what the fish has been through before he makes it to your tank

I would get a larger tank than your friends 3 gallon, it will be very hard to keep water and meds stable in a tank this size..I would advise a 20 at least. I would start treating ASAP! I hope you have better luck than I did!

Get a large clean bucket from Lowe's and a cheap filter. That's all you need.
