Behold!
The My Aquatic Gardens Bookshelf Reef!

Here is my Home Made Auto Top Off Unit (ATO). The Bookshelf reef evaporates approx 0.5g a week so this simple to build ATO keeps my Water params in check!

good stuff!!!! i just bought the same tank for my girlfriend!!! can you explain your setup to me. i'm interested in your autotop off, how does that work? basically, please explain the whole setup to me, filtering and the whole cha bang!

Hello. I'm new to these. I've been set up for almost 24 hours now. Please tell us about your ato. Do you use a valve system? It looks like you've found a way without electricity?

Thats a pretty slick ATO system. I'm gonna have to steal it.

The way this works is air pressure. I may be wrong, but I'm pretty sure this operates like this:

Two hoses, one high and one low, (both bottle and tank)
Top hose sits higher in the tank, above the bottom hose. The top hose is placed at teh level he wants the water to be.
When the water level drops below that top hose (through evaporation or whatever), it exposes the opening of the hose to air. Air rushes into the hose and allows water to exit the jug/top off container from the bottom hose.
Water will only leave the jug as long as air is allowed to replace it by the top hose. Once the top hose is under water again, air can no longer enter the jug and displace the water. The pressure keeps it in place.

Make sense?

Same thing as the old Nurce tanks and this:

Me too, that's a really good idea :)

nice tank....

Home Made G-ATO

Home Made G-ATO

Yes everyone loves my Ghetto/Gravity ATO. And I gotta say it works 75% of the time. :)
It's for the Reefer on a budget!

SoMoney's Gravity(Ghetto)-Auto Top Off Unit.
STEP 1: THE SHELF
SoNano.jpg

The G-ATO if you still dont get it, requires GRAVITY to function and must be placed higher than the tank itself.

STEP 2: The JUG
ATO-Jug.jpg

You need a RIDGID Water & AIR tight jug! I picked up this little .5g Jug at a health food store.
DRILL two holes: As high as you can for air, As low as you can for Water.
GLUE: A couple airline couplers to your jug. The Valves in the project are USELESS and only mess things up so I snipped off the ends and glued the adjustment valves in place. If you can find couplers without the valves just use those.

STEP 3: THE AIR TRIGGER.
ATO-AirIntake.jpg

Using a:
3/4" PVC Cap
3/4" to 1" PVC Adapter
2 pieces of airline (bigger the better)
2 pieces of Styrofoam
I fabricated something that can sit in the back of the tank.
The Top AirLine feeds to the top of my PVC Cap.
The Bottom WaterLine snakes into the back of my TopFin10 filter.
In the photo you can see that when the water level drops (artificially in this case) PVC Air Triger fills jug with air which then allows fresh water to flow into the back of my HOB filter.

From my observations there are 3 possible outcomes when I do this.

1. Everything goes well.
As shown in the picture when I lift the air intake line out of the water, the PVC Cap POP's, and drains, and GULPS AIR which is then sent to the top of the water jug via the AirLine allowing the WaterLine to then dribble fresh distilled water back into your tank untill it reaches the PVC cap again and drips to a stop.

2. Everything goes Weird but still works.
Sometimes when the water level drops to activate the AirLine Triger, some water and bubbles get sucked into the airline and carried into the ATO. Not really a big deal as the ATO still functions as designed at tops off the tank.

3. When it doesnt work.
Sometimes too many bubbles get into the airline and there isnt enough gravity to drain the WaterLine or Fill the airline.
Workarround: I flick the Airline with my finger and it wakes up and works again.

Now that you have this TOP SECRET information, you can send me all your Frags as payment.. :P

Yes,
water always go to the back of the HOB to allow the fresh water more time to mix. Originally I had both Air and Water lines attached to the PVC cap but that proved to be less reliable so I urge others not to make that same mistake and do what I do.

very nice! :) What kind of lighting do you have on that puppy?

AQUALIGHT T-5 DOUBLE LINER STRIP from Coralife
What drew me to this? It doubled my Wattage (14 to28W), and it was Cheap! (sells for less than $40). It includes a 10,000K and a ACTNIC 03 BLUE.

T5's put out some amazing light for there cheap and small package.

And it brings out the colors in my Ricordea....

This is beautiful. I will gladly send you frags when, someday, I have some.

One more question.

The drain hose (from the bottom of the jug) is attached to the filter system, right? Would that be ok to put into the pump side of an ac refugium mod? That should stir it up enough shouldn't it? before it hits the LR or whatever in the refugium?

Say, do you know anything about the toxicity of pink leather corals? About the color of a bag of live brine shrimp. I'm starting to think they are awfully mean. I moved my little tiny 3/4 inch frag yesterday about 1 inch over in the tank. Last night around 2 am I saw a pink worm with pinker stripes (similar colors as the leather coral) stretching out of his hole. This afternoon the worm is dead, hanging out in loops on the rock  What do I have in this tank?
