Hi Sonny,

I've been dosing vodka and MB7 in my tank for a month and a half. It definitely looks better. But I still had hair algae, so I thought maybe I wasn't dosing enough MB7. So I did increase the amount of drops to 12 per day. I have a rough 70-80 net gallons.

Last week I started to notice what I thought was cyno bacteria. I was at 3.6ml of vodka at the time. So I stop dosing the vodka this past Sunday and increased my MB7 levels to the (High-nutrient levels ~ 3 capfulls). One last thing I split those levels into two doses, one morning and one night.

What you see in the pics below is in the front right corner of my tank. It comes out during the day but seems to go away towards the evening (even with all my lights still on). I believe someone posted that you can get a black film algae if you dose too much MB7. It looks more black than red to me. Now I'm not sure if it's cyno (I hope you or anyone else can confirm it, because I actually have never seen it in my tank).

Any ideas?

Sorry but I have to post a FTS to show you what your thread has helped accomplish! Now I just need to do my interceptor treatment, ERRR!

Depending on your CA levels, you could add more CA into the tank in order to lower the ALK. The only problem with this is that you may get some precipitate and build up on your pumps and such.

What is you CA currently at?
Around 480 ppm. I don't think I can push any further unless I do a water change haha :S

Happy Reefing,

Sunny how do you dose Lugol? You drop direct in the tank or you dilute it in water and target feed? You turn off the skimmer for a while or let it running?

Hello,

I dose the Lugols one drop a day directly into the display tank without turning my skimmer off.

Do you dose Strontium, AA, MB7 and everything else at the same time? I have been doing this so that I don't have to turn the skimmer off more than once per day. I'm not sure if it is a good idea though.

upon looking into my issue more, i think i found where i messed everything up...

I too was using Recipe 1... but somewhere along the line i forgot the whole "dose equal parts of 1 and 2" thing... so i wasn't dosing any where near as much CA as i was Alk.. because my CA was spot on so i didn't want to raise my dosing anymore...

But still not sure if not dosing equal parts of both led to my issues?

Anyways, i pulled the plug on my dosing pump... i did a water change today, and i'm not going to dose any 2 part for a few days until my levels drop a bit (CA is 500)... then i'm going to start the whole dosing process again from scratch... hopefully that will fix things?

And no, there's no way my corals were growing faster than yours :eek2:

 Ok, maybe my corals are growing faster then yours. :p
When you run into and issue like you have, going back to the beginning is always the best thing to do. You could just wait a few days and not dose, this way your corals will bring down the CA and ALK. Once the levels are normal again then you can start up with dosing as usual.

Concerning the Zeostart, I have never used it but dont see how it could be any different/better then vodka, sugar, or vinegar. I would rather save money and use a cheaper alternative. The more money you save on addivtives, the more money you can spend on corals.

I hear you on that one, but my thinking is that if you ask a question about using Vodka on the zeovit forum or you ask a "zeohead" they would say you really shouldn't... ??

Maybe that's just a way to get you to buy their product? I've used it before, and obviously i haven't done any analysis of it, but it smells just like vinegar ;)

Sonny,

How much MB7 would you suggest dosing daily for a 80g total water volume? For the initial 1 or 2 week period. Then after this how much?

Thanks

Hello,

add 5 ml (1 capful) per 25 US-gallons for the first two weeks.(Three in your case) After that add add 1 drop per 50 US-gallons daily(Two drops in your case).

Hi,
I started dosing voda and MB7 a few days ago, as per the regimen. I have a refugium and am running GFO as well. Today I decided to take the GFO offline. About 3 hours later my PH dropped from a rock solid 8.0 to 7.4! Is it possible that the GFO was limiting phosphates in the water which was limiting the bacteria and that now suddenly there is an explosion of bacterial growth with resulting CO2 acidifying the water???

If so, what do I do right now to correct the drop and how do you prevent this in general?

Thanks

Drops in PH is due to the bacteria rapidly multiplying and eating up the available O2. Unless you are running no skimmer at all or an inadequate one you should not have a large drop in PH when starting up MB7.

To solve the current issue I would place an airline into the tank connected to an air pump. Also, placing a powerhead pointed towards the surface will help as well.

Is your skimmer and water movement sufficient in your system?

Thanks Sunnyx

Don't you find the detritus accumulates every where if youdon't run a pre filter?

Thanks

Kevin

Hello,

I have enough flow in my tank in my tank that detritus doesn't have a chance to settle down. Besides, if anything does settle my army of bristle worms will make quick work of it. ;)

Hello,

your system is look great.

I wouldn't worry too much about that small patch. I get them when I overdose my MB7. They come and go and are a good indicator of when to scale back on MB7.

Keep up the good work. ;)

Ok I just can't keep up Sonny with all the additives and times. Can you please post a Recap if what your dosing, when and how much. The only reason is I am trying to mimic your dosing so I can have a beautiful reef tank like yours some day.
Thanks

Hello,

I dose strontium and MB7 at the same time and dont turn off my skimmer. When I dose AA's I turn off my skimmer for about an hour.

Hello,

I ran into the "too clean" issue a few months back. My system reached a point where my coral faded and were starving. I combated this by feeding the fish more and adding AA's.

Cool, understood...thnks for the info. Being new at reefing I didn't realize I was starving stuff for a long time via ulns..now have it under control. I have a 120g, but only have 2 fish in it still..I think that some more fish to feed would help me balance it out further. Been running the Neozeo system for 6 weeks now and liking it. I am at 2ml of the AAs per day currently...lot of the corals I messed up in the past are on the upswing.

Appreciate your thread/methods..your leading edge tank keeps looking better and better.

_Matt

Thanks Sonny!

I guess it's back to dosing vodka! I do have one more question. Do you think I need to stop vodka dosing while doing the 3 week interceptor treatment?

That's what I get for not dipping my frags!!! :(

Thanks!

Matt

Thanks! I really appreciate the feedback. ;)

A few more fish in your tank will go along way towards promoting coral coloration and overall health.

Good luck!

I would stop the vodka and MB7 when dosing the interceptor, at least for a couple days. I am not sure why you would need to dose interceptor for three weeks. Whenever I have dosed my system with it I did it only one time and it worked great. I usually treat the system for 6 hours and then conduct a 40gl water change followed by 6 cups of carbon.

Is your infestation that severe that you need to conduct a three week treatment?
