Cool, lets me know how it all works out for you. You will love T5's!

Thank you. :D

3x Blue+ : Noon-11:30PM
Blue+, Fiji Purple: 2:30PM-10:30PM
2x Aquablue Special: 4:30PM-9:30PM

Hey Sunny,

What's your placement of bulbs (front to back)? This is the same combo i am getting when i switch out bulbs in a few weeks. Right now i run 3 Blue+ and 3 Aquablue Special. Adding a 7th bulb for the fiji purple. Thanks!

Sunny, I just started the maintenance dose with MB7, according to a 150 total water volume, my dosage should be 6 capfuls for the first two weeks. This seems like an awful lot? Also after the first two weeks, what amount of drop should I be adding? I believe it was 5 drops, just wanted to confirm this with you, and also ask you isn't this a huge drop off from 6 capfuls to 5 drops?

Sonny have you played around with water changes? Meaning do you think that one of your tanks contributing factors is that you do a 30 gallon water change once a month. I typically do 10 gallons a week with my 72.

I started dosing vodka and then stopped. Note I did not try MB7. I got some good results and some bad. I got no skimmate production after a while and my kole tang got hole on the head. I was feeding only spectrum, so I think that was the cause. I dosed vodka for 2 months and my skimmate became less and less. I got great colors from all my corals and noticed a reduction in algae. I had very little algae on my glass. I started to get red cotton algae, so I decided to just stop since I would be gone for the holidays.

Anyway, I want to restart and am going to start up with MB7 for 2 weeks. Do you think I should cut back on the water changes? Is to much bad for a bacteria driven system?

Well, too many water changes can be bad for some systems. I used to do small water changes every week but it became detrimental to the stability of my system. I cut back on the water changes and my tank actually began to look better while being more stable. You need to find the right balance for your system when changing out the water.

Hello,

The dosing sounds right. The first two weeks are the most important as you will be seeding ht system with bacteria. If you are worried about dosing during the first two weeks then you may want to dose only half the dose and then adjust according to your observations and tests.

Ok good, however I seem to be getting A LOT of algae on the glass while dosing, what causes this, and should I change the dosage because of this, it's not really hurting anything other than being an eye sore.

Thanks Sonny. You have a stellar tank. I might have to make a trip up to see your setup and to buy some frags off of ya. I go to Purdue, so I don't know how far that would be.

That is the same as Sonny's. He uses an Aquascience 22k which is the same thing as the ATI Blue Plus. Great combo!

I've got a 120 (60 gallon sump, about 145 total water volume) that has been set up for a little over a year. I wasn't getting the results I wanted with vodka dosing, so in september I stopped dosing, loaded with mb7 for 2 weeks, then resumed vodka dosing (from the beginning of the vodka dosing regimen).

The problems I'm having now are nitrates around 25 and STN. I'm up to 35 drops of MB7 and 9ml of vodka a day (worked up from 3 months ago in september). So, I either need to keep plowing through until the nitrates go down, or I've hit a brick wall with this method. Either way, I need some advice from people in this thread :)

I have a relatively high bioload with the two poop machine large angels: emp angel (med size, adult color), blueface angel(juv), flame angel, lamark angel, chromis, yellow tang and a tomato clown. I have an oversized skimmer (MRC MR2R) that gets a lot of good crud out.

The sump has powerheads in blowing the debris around and the fuge section just holds live rock (with a super strong K4 keeping the dust from settling). The tank is barebottom and I siphon what I can every few days.

As of testing tonight, my params are:
ph: (fluctuates 8.0 - 8.3)
alk: 8.2 (has dropped a little low, I usually keep it around 9 +/- .4)
no3: 25 (hard to tell, 15-25, either way, not zero and it has been this way for a while)
ca: 440
mg: 1380

I dose two part from BRS, 5 drops of brightwell lugols per week, and seachem strontium. No amino acids, coral food, etc. Fish get almost strictly NLS pellets with some hikari and PE mysis every now and then.

You can check my tank out here. I've kept notes on the process, as well as parameter logs for the last couple of months.

Random corals in my tank STN. I really feel like it is due to the nitrates. I've looked close for pests without finding any.

If you need any other information, please ask. Or if anyone wants to post an idea via pm, feel free.

Thanks for reading :)

The would look good, but ultimately it will come down to your personal preferences. Move one or two bulbs around can have a big impact on the appearance of the tank.

Ok good, however I seem to be getting A LOT of algae on the glass while dosing, what causes this, and should I change the dosage because of this, it's not really hurting anything other than being an eye sore.

If you are worried about the increased algae on the glass than I would scale back on the dosing. The dosing may have increased the clarity of your water, causing more light to reach the glass, which in turn increased the growth of algae.

Anytime. ;)

One of the best tanks I had the privilege to see. Great, Great inspiration.

Thanks! :D

Awsome tank, you are inspiration for us all. After seeing yours and many other T5 tanks I would like to change over to T5s also. The tank is a 30x30x24 and will have 10-24w tubes. I am thinking about one of the following combinations. Could you please give me your input? Thanks.

6-ATI Blue+
2-ATI Aqua Blue Special
2-KZ Fiji Purple
or
6-ATI Blue+
3-ATI Aquablue Spl.
1-KZ Fiji Purple
or
5-ATI Blue+
3-ATI Aquablue Spl.
2-KZ Fiji Purple
or ?

Hello and thank you. :D

I would go with is combo:

6-ATI Blue+
3-ATI Aquablue Spl.
1-KZ Fiji Purple

This combo will give you a great balance of color, while providing great grow and coloration.

Hi Sunny, what do you think it would look like with your same light combo and placement but to swap out one of the blue pluses for another fiji purple? the extra fiji purple would go on the third bulb spot in from the front, so both fiji purples are straddling the middle bulb.

I think I have learned more off of this thread then all the other reading on this site. Tank looks amazing

Thanks! Although the thread has slowed down in pace, I hope you can learn many more things in the future. :D

Hello,

A second Fiji Purple bulb would be much to pink in my opinion. How many bulbs do you plan on running?

Thanks for the reply, I am running the Constellstion fixture also. So may be I will go with your same setup. would you still run the same bulbs for great color if you did not have the powerbrite leds? Right now I run
ATI Blue plus
UVL aquasun
blue plus
ATI aquablue
blue plus
aquasun
blue plus
I actually really like this color but I was told the reddish color from the aquasun bulb could e why my corals have always looked light colored.

Replace the first Aquasun with a Fiji Purple and replace the second Aquasun with an ATI Aquablue Special. This would give you the same bulb combo as I run, which has provided great coloration and growth for me.

The PowerBrite doesn't really affect the color of the tank much, but the shimmer and "pop" of the zoo's/acans is noticeable.

Great looking tank no wonder why its TOTM.....Thanks for showing

Thank you. :D This tank has been TOTM on a few other sites, just not RC....yet. ;)

Sunny, one more thing. Do you have your fiji purple bulb 3 bulbs from the back or 3 bulbs from the front? When you say to replace my first aquasun with the fiji purple I assume you are talking second bulb from the front. Would it look more balanced if I put the bulb more towards the center like yours? Please if you would show me your bulb selction and placement noting front and back.

Here is my current combo and placement:

ATI Blue Plus
ATI Aqua Blue Special
