sunny, i am suprised you use the Brightwell AA. I think almost everything they make is great, but their AAs seem way watered down compared to most.

Thanks Sunny. You mention that over dosing could lead to brown on the rocks and sandbed. Just so I know, what would I be looking for in the tank to know my dosage is correct? Color, growth, clarity, etc?

It is easier to tell if you are overdosing then if the dosage is correct. It is pretty hard to OD on bacteria so I wouldn't worry about it.

sunny, is your web page up to date as far as dosing supplements? i'm at about 1ml of vodka a day and notice some brown slime on the aquarium glass alittle too quick for me. I was wondering if you are dosing 2ml or .2 ml of vodka? thanks

Hello :D

Yes, the dosing is correct. I am dosing 2ML of Vodka to clear things up. Is the brown slime stingy or like diatoms? Are you dosing MB7 or any other bacterial supplement?

Well I finished the 1st initial split.

I'll have to knock off the rest tomorrow. Lots of good information. Don't worry about my PM, I believe I found the information I was looking for, and if not... I'm sure I'll find it in my reading tomorrow. Thanks for all the great documentation. :)

i'm dosing about 1 ml of vodka and 1/2 capful of brightwells MB. The brown is not stringy, it's more like diatoms. Keep in mind the tank is only a month old. thanks

If it is diatoms then .......Meh.

I wouldn't worry about it. Your system is just going through some standard growing pains. Just stick to the dosages and you will be fine.

Hi Sonny,
Why did you start vodka to begin with? Were you not getting good results with GFO and a refugium? I'm trying to decide if I want to make the switch. On one hand its nice to not to have to worry about dosing and just letting cheato grow and GFO run on the other hand it would be nice to have a more empty sump and only have to dose 2ml of a 'magic bullet'.

I just want to be sure before I dismantle my refugium that this is a better method of nutrient export.

Thanks

Hello and welcome to RC! :D

I started up vodka and bacteria mainly out of curiosity. I have no problems in the past growing and maintain SPS, but I was very bored. I tore down the old 225gl and started up the new 100gl with European systems as a guide.

So far I have been very happy with the results and the extra money I have saved on refugium lighting and GFO.

Sonny I was dosing vodka in a 58 and quit. I didn't quit cold turkey but I weaned it down. The reason being a yellowish green stringy algae formed that I couldn't keep up with. I was having to scrape the glass twice a day. If I read this right with MB7 I won't have these problems. Once this is established I can start back with the vodka.

Quick question on the MB7 and vodka; I have been dosing the stuff for possibly a month now and the areas in the sand bed which are clean look amazing and other areas where a little dark green GHA linger stay there. The rocks seem free of algae (as was before) and the glass, powerheads, and overflow cover gets GHA growing on them still. I still brush out the power heads and clean the overflow teeth. I'm dosing 8 drops of MB7 and 1mL of vodka daily and it seems to make the water look great but the areas that the GHA are lingering, they are not going away and it is obvious it still is growing a bit.

It looks WAY better than it used to, but it'd be cool to get rid of it totally. Do I need to increase the dose on vodka? I figured I would stop at 1mL a day because I bought a salifert test kit for nitrates and found them to be 0 along with phosphates (salifert).

Hi Sonny,

Do you have any issues with the vortech and your sandbed. im looking at getting the same caribsea special grade with 3 vortechs on a 60x36x20 but dont want a sandstorm.

thanks

The yellow stringy stuff may have been Dinoflagellates or some form of nuisance bacteria. Although there are no guarantees, the MB7 should reduce the likelihood of "bad" bacteria gaining a foot hold.

Dose the MB7 for two weeks and then start the vodka back up.

Sonny... I am still trying to make sense out of all of this stuff... let me see if I am on the right track...

vodka dosing... carbon source...stimulates certain bacteria to grow that help keep nitrates and phos down to a low level...

MB7... bacteria source... introduces more strains of bacteria that also help consume nitrates and phos...

Am I even close?? Now, what do the AA's do...

ugh... this is alot for an OLD reefmama like me... LOL thanks for all your help!

hi sunnyx

I used ten days not to see has the effect, but no3 po4 was very low, I want to have the good effect to appear slowly

Yeah, I get some type of stringy kinda clearish algae on the glass when I dose too much of the carbon source. I just cut back the dose a little and it goes away. So far I think if you see this algae its too much carbon and if you get some brown biofilm looking stuff (not diatoms) its too much MB7.

Hello,

The algae may be eating up the Po4 before it can register on a test. Continue what you are doing and give it time. Eventually the bacteria will out compete the algae. 1Ml of vodka is a light dosage so bumping it up to 1.2ml is an option.

Hello,

With the Caribsea Seaflor Special Grade I have not had any issues with sand blowing around. In a tank the size of the one your are getting you should have no issues with 3 vortechs.
