Hi Sunny,
Quick question...because you use minimal rock scape in the display have you added more rock to your sump system to supliment it?
Thanks....your tank is an inspiration.

Thank looks amazing! :eek2:
What is your current fish list?
Thanks

48" x 24" x 20" Rimless
100 gallons from http://www.miraclesaquariums.com/
2 Sided Starphire glass( Front and left side)

Stand
The stand is hand built and tiled. No equipment will be under the tank. The sump and all equipment will be located in the room directly behind the tank.

Sump
Existing 45 gallon AGA tank

Water Movement
Ehiem 1260 for Return pump
1 Un-modded Tunze 6025 Nano Stream
Vortech Mp40w
Vortech Mp20
2 Un-modded Tunze 6045’s Nano Streams(now in sump)

Aquactinics Constellation 7x54W T5
The fixture will be hung from the ceiling
The bulbs will consist of the following:

FRONT
ATI Blue Plus
ATI Aqua Blue Special
ATI Aqua Blue Special
ATI Blue Plus
ATI Blue Plus
ATI Aqua Blue Special
AquaScience Blue 22k

After running high powered Metal Halides for years I decided to change things up a bit. After running the fixture over my holding tank I can tell you that the color combo is outstanding. Along with the great color and output the unit runs very cool and quiet.

Skimmer
Existing Deltec AP851

I am hoping that this will not be over kill on a smaller tank such as this. Worst case scenario I can just feed the fish more; I’m sure they won’t mind.

Calcium and Alk Addition
Randy’s Two Part Solution
I ran both a CA reactor and Kalk Stirrer in the past and honestly have had better results will a simple DIY two part solution. I may also look into the Balling Method, but for now I am happy with the two part solution.

Substrate
The bottom of the tank will be covered with a SSB consisting of .
CaribSea Seaflor Special Grade Reef Sand

Hi Sunny,

Hello,

No additional rocks in the sump. Many reefers out there have way too much rock in their systems. I only use enough rock to support my corals so that they have a sturdy base on which to grow on.

Hey Sunny,

Your tank is looking awesome. After a trip to my LFS yesterday to pick up some new corals I noticed the tanks there are not lit as brightly as mine, they look great though, the show tank there could easily be a totm. So I've went from 3 400w mhs to 2. My tank is a 240 gal, 8'x2'x2'. Think that will be enough lighting. Something else I'm wondering about is my flow rate is very high. I run a 5500 gpm hammerhead pump to supply flow, no powerheads. I have flow accelerators on my returns. I always thought the more flow the better but again after noticing the flow in the tanks at the LFS was much lower than mine I'm wondering if maybe I've got a little overkill. What do you think. I always get inspired after looking at the beautiful tanks at the LFS but its kind of frustrating as it seems the care of them is not the best but the results are amazing.

Hey sonny,

are you back to dosing 14drops of MB7 daily?

Do you feel carbon is better in a reactor or just like you have it in a bag in your sump? where about in the sump is your bag?

I have the same water volume as you and 2 weeks ago started 6 drops of MB7 daily. 1.5ml vodka. will see how it goes.

thanks

Heres a pic of the tank. Also had to show off the new acro, its beautiful, has glowing green tips. Not sure what it is though.

Im not sure what the procedures for bringing over corals internationally but I will be sure to bring you a frag of each SPS I have if I can make it to Beirut in December. :D

That would be great if it's not too much for you to carry those for sure. It'll be great to have my tank assessed by you to know whats right and what's wrong.

I dont smoke cigs, but I do enjoy the occasional fine cigar.

Great, then allow some time when you vist for a fine Cuban Cigar them. I always have some special ones. We do get Cuban Cigars here:smokin:

Nothing really has changed. Vodka and MB7 dosages change weekly based on observations.
This post was a while ago but maybe you can help us out. Thanks

Sunny, I love the thread and have learned so much about dosing and the reasons behind it. What I am wondering is what you are looking for, and how are you changing or remedying the problem? Is it algae, or are you looking for coloration? Does this have to do with the vodka, MB7, nutrition, or Calcium and Alk levels?

I hope this helps others following this thread on how to read your tank, what to look for, and how to adjust your dosing.

Thanks Sunny
Adam

Sunny,
Do you think it would have any negative effects if you suddenly stoped dosing the mb7 one day. For example, like a large bacteria die off of some sort.

I'll take a stab at this too...

If you've been dosing for awhile, like 3 months +, and you've reached ULN, then the bacteria will thrive a long while before they die off and depleted. Of course if you do a bunch of water changes, then the bacteria will deplete much sooner. Then your nutrients (and depending on how much you feed) like NO3 and PO4 will start to climb again as bacteria population gets low. If these nutrients go up high enough, you could start to get nuisance algae in your tank. Also factor in the size of your tank, the bigger the tank the longer it takes to deplete bacteria population.

Hi sonny,

Need some help on bulb placement..this is what I was thinking,

ATI blue+
ATI blue special
ATI blue+
ATI fiji purple

ATI blue +

would you make any changes to the lights or the order there placed.. Thanks sonny

Move the Fiji Purple to slot number 2 or 3. You want the red to strike the viewing side of the corals.

Corals can get used to almost anything however the idea is to do it all VERY slowly. Light and flow are proportional - the more light you supply, the more flow needed to compensate for the additional respiration/free radicals/oxygen from the corals. It sounds like the LFS tanks you point to have just had a LONG time to establish that livestock under those specific conditions and grown to fill it in.

Thanks Sonny for the inspiration. Now all I think about is 48x24x20 rimless starfire. I have found a local builder here in Salt Lake that can build it. I can hardly wait to get started. I think I will go with an ATI 6 bulb and Vortechs. What do you think about the new Deltec TC skimmers? Are they worth the price?.......thanks again
