I just purchased the domain name as the site was getting WAY too much traffic to be on a free service plan.

Ecotech, maker of the popular Votech Series pumps has just posted a link to the review of the MP40w I had on my website: http://ecotechmarine.com/reviews/rimless-reef-mp40w-review/

This, along with links on Reef Central and Zeovit has driven daily traffic and emails up tremendously.

I also have many ideas, pictures, and insight on the page. I plan on making the web site larger soon while adding on another reefer to the page. I am in talks with a few big retailers so look out for free giveaways and drawings in the future.

The site is small and and simple right now, but the increased traffic warrants some changes so be on the look out.

Here is my new web site address: www.RimlessReef.com

Thanks! :D

Congrats on the new SPS setup. You will be fine with 6 bulbs but it may be a little too strong for some of the corals. I would go with 4 or 5 bulbs max.

Do you plan on purchasing a fixture or retrofitting them yourself?

i will be retro fitting them my self to save on money - might go for a proper unit in the future when i have a bit more spare cash

and congrats on the new site - very nice clean layout :bum:

Great looking tank Sonny. Nice site setup too. Are you planning on selling frags from your site?

Well, I have not setup a frag tank yet, probably this or next weekend, when and if I list corals for sale on the site I will be sure to let everyone know. If I go through I will be purchasing a banner her on RC to make sure everything is legitimate and fair for everyone involved.

For now, the site is simply there for information, news, reviews, and entertainment. If it becomes a commercial site I will be sure to take the appropriate steps with Reef Central.

And, as always, everyone is free to ask questions here in my thread.

awesome tank sonny, a few quick questions for you.

1. why do you dose vodka and MB7, and how did you figure out the correct dosage of each?

2. ive got an SPS tank similar in size to yours (48x24x24) and i got an ATI powermodule 10*54 watt fixture on back order, do you think thatll be fine or should i down grade it to the 8*54 watt fixture?

Answers below:

1. I use Vodka along with MB7 for a couple reasons. First off, I need a healthy population of beneficial bacteria to take up the waste in the tank. I add the bacteria in order to multiply the population of the bacteria. Now, without the addition of beneficial bacteria such as MB7 I run the risk of having harmful bacteria, such as red cyano, proliferate. Additionally, with water changes, chemical additions, and a large protein skimmer the bacterial population may shrink at times. With MB7 I do not have to worry about this or fearing that a opportunistic harmful bacteria take over.

2. If you can, I would go with the 8 bulb. The 10 bulb is simply too much lighting for a tank your size, especially if you plan on keeping Acan's or other LPS in your tank. I have a 7 bulb fixture and i have to keep my Acan's as far away from direct light as possible. Even on the edge of the tank sitting on the sand bed I still have some Acan's that are slightly bleached out.

KEEPERZ, Dave: Thanks! :D

I tried something out the other and found some interesting results. I sometimes turn my lights out for a day to simulate storms and such. I figure that on a natural reef there are at least one or two days a month when the sun iisnt shining down at 100%.

So, I decided to turn my lighting off for two days to see what would happen. To my surprise I had many corals put down substantial growth within the two days of darkness. I even had a pink digi that had gone dormant put on nice growth tips.

I only wish I would have documented the findings with my camera. :(

Oh, well. I will try this again next month. But this time with pictures!

i have heard about this happening before and i think its because the corals arent spending a ton of energy turning light into glucose but instead using that energy to grow

well i have the ATI bubble master 250 on my tank so im not worried about the skimmer, i just found it interesting that you are doisng two bacteria sources, but how did you figure out how much of the MB7 you needed to dose

Wow when you turned the lights out did you leave on any moon lights or anything or just pitch black.
When you first started to dose the vodka and you said you noticed the cyno, was it the stringy stuff or just red on your rocks. After dosning a carbon source for a couple of days here i noticed my rocks are turning red (not coraline either), but its not the stringy cyno that i had in my first tank at one time. So my question is do i stop dosing it or just cut back on the amount of carbon dosing. I do use the MB7 but only dose 5ml once a week right after my water change, should i be doing it everyday you think? So far what i noticed with the carbon source my tank glass is as clean as ever im on 3 days and not much bio film there and that has not happend in the new tank yet, so i like it and colors are improving as well. I dont want to stop, but with the red on the rocks not sure at this point.

First off your tank is amazing.

I have a question regarding the importance of adding bacteria when dosing Vodka. I am thinking about dosing Vodka due to some algae issues in my tank. Also most of my SPS are dark, or brown in color (though of course test kits (Salifert and API) all read 0 for NO3 PO4).

Is it important to couple dosing Vodka with adding bacteria? I see many paeople just dose Vodka with good results. Any thought on that either with or without and why (though I think you do boht just wondering your thought process to arrive there).

Thanks

oh, and I imagine a Euroreef RS-80 skimmer would be sufficently powered to handle Vodka dosing (on a 50gal setup)?

Well, for now I am simply following the instructions on the back of the bottle. As things progress I will adjust my dose based on skimmer production.

Yes, it was completely dark for two days.

The stuff you are seeing looks like cotton candy right? I would stop dosing for a week but start dosing bacteria in drops daily. Start up the vodka again after a week but start back at half the dose.

I have been able to keep the red cotton stuff away by dosing vodka and bacteria daily at the sames time.

Good luck!

I guess its like cotton candy lol. I did my water change tonight and i tried to brush it away with a toothbrush, but nothing comes off, and i know its not coraline algea, but whatever it is just wont come off. So is it cyno or is it another type of algea, or was yours that way also.
