Sorry, another concern about S. Gigantea

Thanks very much for the encouragement. That really brought a sigh and a smile that something positive happened.

As for introducing the clowns.....what time of day is best?

Would they be alright with the flow right off the bat?

Is the anemone firmly attached? If you do decide to add a small clown, ocellaris and percula are both natural symbionts with gigantea and remain relatively small and are more docile than some most other species.

I would say introduce them with the lights off, if you have your Rod's shipped to you, other wise, time of day doesn't matter too much IMO.

They will be fine in the flow.

garygb: No, I don't think the foot is firmly attached. Here is a current picture of my smallest clown. It is from Rod, and I believe it is a boy. He has not grown much at all since I got him, while the others have grown considerably. The development of the stripes can give you an idea of how small he is....

reefman13: Thanks for the advice. I'm still uncertain if it's a good idea to put him in....because the foot is not attached.

dont put that one in put in the bigger rods, at this point they are both sexless, but putting the smaller one alone could cause confusion for him...

Thanks GSM, I will monitor for another day and prepare to put the larger of Rod's in.

How long before I add the second one?

when the nem has been happy looking for 2 weeks straight at least.

If you decided to add the clowns, one or two is a big deal. I know when my S. gigantea was not doing well, the clowns can dive right into the mouth of the anemone and dig up food, and inner structures of the anemones. This will stress the clown and likely quicken it's demise.
My anemones also deflated and inflated on daily basis. He looks much better at night than during the day under light. If this is the case, consider dim the light initially when the anemone is not doing well. I know that when H. magnifica not doing well, lower light level may help them recover, even when I know that H. magnifica require very high light. I do not know if this is the case with S. gigantea, but it is certainly a reasonable assumption.

Today is Day 6.

Thanks for sharing your experience OrionN. I can't tell which is better with mine, during the day or night. It shrinks up very small when lights go out.

Here it is, right before lights out. Still hasn't planted it's foot.
I'm still uncertain about what to do.....it's a judgement call and I don't have the confidence to call it.

I dont have any experiance with S.gigantea. However, I have two H.magnifica anemones. One I;ve kept for two years, the other for 5 months. The newer of the two would not anchor its foot for the first two weeks. It just about drove me nuts. It finally settled in and planted. Have patience. Its settling in, and looking better day by day.

To me it looks better and better. I wouldn't worry about the foot, if it's able to hold in one spot then it's OK, if not, maybe dial back the flow then. But otherwise I suggest stay the course. :)

Today is day 7.
Yahoo, I made it to the first milestone.
It has stayed in it's place.

And here showing the location in the tank. I had to place rocks toward the front in order to stop the sand from piling up. I will be putting some rubble there to cover up the bottom of the tank.

I agree. Now is the time- especially if you'll be home this holiday weekend to observe how it goes.

you now have Gary and Rod telling you to add the fish, These are the two guys i would definitely be listening to.:)

Better get the stopwatch out ;) because rods onyx love hosting so much that fish should find the Gigantea in under a minute after being added. haha

Okay, I will do so first thing in the morning.

Would adding them both be a bad idea?

I'm just concerned that small one will get bullied even more in the nursery without the distration of the larger onyx to spread the aggression.

The larger one has a more developed middle stripe (not complete though) compared to the one pictured above, to give a reference of size.

the main concern (for me) at this point would be the anemone but two small percula might not harm your anemone. Or they might :D
If you see a fish start diving down the mouth of your gigantea and into it's inside cavity this isn't a good thing and I would yank the fish ASAP.

Thank you again for the guidance.

I will add the one pictured above tomorrow and monitor the smaller in the nursery for any signs of trouble.

If you are home over the weekend and if your want to add the clowns, I would add them either Friday night or Sat AM. Yank them out fast if there is any problem.
Good luck
