Sorry, another concern about S. Gigantea

Wil do so OrionN.

This morning I added the clown. So far, it has stayed in the underside of the rocks on the right side of the tank and not come out.

Here is day 8, with the clown in the tank. I will update probably in a week.

looks good, Is it in the shade of your rock work? If so I would move some rock, like one rock a day until it gets full light.
Please keep us informed.

It does look good and seem better all the time. I am in the process of setting a tank up (building my house at this time) I love to have a S. gigantea after a year or two.

Hello, I'm happy to say I've made it to the second Milestone.

Today is the end of week 2. The anemone hasn't moved from the spot.

Delphinus: Yes, I don't know what to make of the color. Sometimes it looks green, sometimes brown, sometimes purple with yellowish tips.

Orion: Thanks, I would very much like to see you post your setup once you move. I bet it would look very nice.

Cope: I hope yours is doing well still. On the very left there is a small overhang from the rock. Otherwise, there isn't much shade.
How do you tell if it wants more light?

So, what happened after I put the larger Rod's in? Nothing. The clown went and hid under rock on the right side and wouldn't come out. It didn't come out for a day, which I thought was really odd being that their personality seems fearless. I wasn't sure what to do, so I put the other baby in.

The smaller baby never hid. It just stayed in the front right corner of the tank. Then, later in the day, I saw them both in the corner! Yay, they found each other!:bounce1:

Then, when I woke up the next morning they were here:

Sorry, I couldn't pick which picture to post, so I decided to post all of them.

I would still like to hear people's assessment on the health of the gigantea please. I did see it catch food and open the mouth really wide.

I also did see the clowns stick their face in the mouth, when it looks like a 'belly button'. They are not diving into it, but stick their face in there repeatedly.

Looks great. As far as I can tell it looks very healthy.

Mine practically invert themselves when eating, the mouth opens so much. However, it's short lived, they close their mouth within a few minutes. So if it's something like that what you're seeing, it's probably pretty normal.

Looking fine there in those last pics. I'm very glad the gigantea and clowns are settling in well for you.

That's fantastic to hear, thank you very much.

What is the time period for them to get to know each other? I mean, if they were going to be too rough with the anemone, would I know by now? Is the critical period over with introducing the clowns?

Yes, when it catches bits of food, the mouth gets so big! I get scared. I also see the clowns jab their faces in the mouth at that time and I wasn't sure if that would hurt it or not. Also, sometimes they would wrestle food away from the anemone. Is that okay?

Thank you all again for the guidance. I firmly believe it wouldn't be alive today without it.

It look like the anemones and the clowns are all doing well. Congratulation. It will be a very beautiful multicolor anemone.

this is all good to hear.
Don't be alarmed if you see the fish nip and tug at the anemone's tentacles- it's normal IME.
I would refer to this gigantea as a multicolor. It certainly looks like mine.

Starting yesterday, the anemone started to shrink.

I think it might not make it, and I'm saddened. I think I made a mistake, it was something that was mentioned about dosing.

All day today it was flat, and the tentacles are stubby and far apart. The mouth is somewhat loose, but not yet gaping. The clowns still stay with it and are not diving into the mouth. They are just skirting on top of it.

It's looking flaccid and just overall flattened. Up until yesterday, it was eating every day (bits that it catches).

I did my weekly water change today and it did not look better. I changed the flow, no response.

What I did do was add some kalk w/topoff water 2 nights ago. I didn't add B-Ionic since I thought the liquid alk was what they were sensitive too.

Could I have irritated it?

don't give up on it yet.
*make sure water flow is good all around the anemone
*make sure temp is 80-82 F
*double check salinity. It should be close to 1.025

anemones don't consume Ca/alk.
Unless you have scleractinians (stony corals) growing in that aquarium the demands on Ca/alk shouldn't be very heavy. (Coralline does consume Ca/alk). There's no reason to use saturated kalkwasser- you can prepare kalk at a weaker safer concentration and all should be OK.

Hello Gary,

Thank you for the advice. I just went to check on it after I read your response.

It's looking close to the first pictures I posted when I first got it, but not as inflated. The mouth looks puckered and wide, like the inner lip has puffed up, folding over the top of the edge.

I had initially lowered the flow, thinking it shrank for that reason. So I cranked it up again after reading your post.
I also moved sand out of the way, the flow had pushed a big pile right in front of the anemone, so I flattened it out.

The temperature was high, closer to 83-84 before lights out. As soon as I saw that, I turned off the heater. I just turned it back on for night.

The salinity was 1.026 as of yesterday.

I was hesitant to add any type of supplement, but when I did a quick test, it looked like the pH and alk was a bit on the lower side (7.8-7.9 pH).

I got worried and added the kalk at night to try to bring it up. So, your suggestion would be never to supplement, correct?

I should just wait until water change day and let the new water bring the levels back up?

So, at this point, would another water change do any good? It's been 2 days since adding the kalk. I did not test the water today.

you'd never guess that my typing skills are the utmost of lame :D

I'm not a big fan of letting water parameters drift downwards until a water change brings them up again. Simply use unsaturated kalkwasser so the anemone doesn't experience a big spike.
A proper water change might be helpful right now, but it might also not make a bit of difference.
Personally, I'd skip the water change and see what the anemone looks like in the next 24-36 hours. Make sure it's temp doesn't get too high. See if the changes made tonight have a positive impact on it's appearance tomorrow.

Thanks!

Yes, when I added the kalk, it was unsaturated. My estimate was 1/2 tsp of Seachem kalk to about 1/2 gallon of RO. I added half of that to the tank. (I have only used kalk reactors so I was just guessing how much here)

No, I would not say your typing skills are lame! I'm just a screwball.

Hopefully, this is not the beginning of the end. I'm very uneasy and feel helpless to correct the situation. Then again, this could be completely unrelated to the kalk, and just due to it's overall health.

I also want to ask about vibrations.....my Vortech seems off center no matter what I do and has been vibrating at the high speed. It's loud, like a computer fan that has something caught in it. Could this cause this behavior?

I very much appreciate your input Gary. I will post more tomorrow.

I checked this morning and it looks better!

I had fixed the vibration last night. The temperature is down to 80 now and I just turned the light on. (I shut off the heater now)

It's swelled to twice the size it was, it's still flat, but the tentacles have grown a little longer compared to yesterday.

Here's hoping it will be okay.

+1 for hoping it will be ok. Why is your temp so high? The heater should have a thermostat that shuts it self off, I never seen one with out it? Maby your heater is bad?
Good luck and keep us posted.
Cope

Hahaa...GSM, sort of. You are right, I don't have Ranco yet. The problem is the heat from the light is causing the increase. My heater shuts off at 80. But, if I put it down to 78, wouldn't that be too cool for it?

What I did for today was turn the heater off for the day, and temp is now reported at 82.

However, it's not looking good at all. It's moved, flattened against a rock sideways, and now sinking into a crevice.
I will take pics when I get home. I am saddened.

Salinity at 1.026. No detectable ammonia, nitrates, nitrites. pH is 8.3-8.4. The last time it ate was on Friday. That's also the last time I saw the tentacles long.

When an anemone is dying, will the clowns move away from it?
