Sorry, another concern about S. Gigantea

oh you need some fans,

u use 2 of the 4 fan units hooked up to my aquacontroller JR they come one at 78.7 for one and 80F for the other set. and both off at 78.4

Yes, I need fans....I just haven't been able to run errands. Also, it seems since the weather warmed up here, I have this problem. When the weather was in the 30-40's it would get to 82F with the lights.

Here are the pictures from 3 days ago vs. tonight.

First, these were pictures I took the day Cope put up a thread asking about other people who had Gigantea threads. Even though the anemone didn't move out of the spot, it did alter orientation. Instead of foot against the back rock and facing the camera, it turned.

It seemed to shrink. Then starting yesterday, it became flat, flaccid, and the tentacles retracted, mouth open but not gaping yet.

Then this morning, it moved. It got pressed against the rock above the original spot.

Starting this afternoon, it went into the crevice and I came home to find this:

Have you tried to feed it any raw shrimp yet? Sorry if I missed the post on feeding, I have feed mine a few times, It loves to eat and looks better after every time. Just a thought, as it seemed to help mine. Folks told me to start off small, and thats what I did. The mouth on my anemone is about 3 inches long. "They" say not to feed any thing larger than the mouth. I started with 3 chunks of shrimp about a quarter of an inch long, and progressed to larger. I also heard that the longer the spend in captivity the more they like to eat. (body functions slow in shipping?) Mine also like to eat mystis on a regular basis, shrimp twice a weeks.

It sure looks like the rock is blocking the light?
Let me know if I can be any help.

Cope

Do you rock the wheels of steel? We got more DJ equipment than you can shake a stick at. Trust me I tried, My stick was badly damaged!

I think still looks OK :p The anemone is getting herself wedge in to the rocks is a good thing .
It will expend in to the light after so time I will not interfere if I was you..
Good luck.

Cope: Yes, I had blown some small bits near it to verify it was eating a couple times. The other times, it grabbed food out of the water. The food was Rod's Food.

Yes, it went into the crevice underneath that rock! It has stayed there since, small body, small tentacles. It's wedged in between the rock and has not changed.

Zoom: thanks, but I'm not very optimistic. Can you tell me why getting itself wedged is a good thing? The way it did it, there is no light and only medium flow. Am I to expect it to expand soon?

Thanks, I wish for good luck. The only thing I can think of to do at this point is to bless the tank!

Cope, sorry I forgot to be more specific.

It ate until the day after I added the kalk topoff. I haven't seen it eat since.

Because every anemone i had so far if it was on the way out, it looks like a blimp floating around the tank it will never anchored it self in to the rocks .

Ahh...I see. So it's not 'caught' in the rocks? It's actually putting the foot down? I thought it got slammed against these rocks and it fell into the crevice and cannot get out. But, I haven't tried to move it. I have left it alone since I posted it wasn't doing well.

Why would it do that underneath another rock? Doesn't it need light?

Thanks again for your input.

Yes it need light but i don't think any one knows why they do things like this . I will let it be and see the outcome, they are very sensitive so stay away :D

Thanks for your support Zoom.

Well, late in the day of my last post, the anemone went further down into the crevice between the two rocks.

One clown went down in there with it. I couldn't see it anymore, I can't find it at all in fact. Most likely it melted away? That's my guess, I have no idea where it is. Ugh.

Was this because of my kalk addition, or just the natural progression of these anemones? I wish I could tell. The only thing I know is that another tank of mine that I did the same thing to ( kalk+topoff manually) is suffering too. I have an elegance in there that has retracted all tentacles since that day I added kalk. I usually dose B-Ionic. I also had this weird cyano bloom in there after that as well. I don't think my Brute is leeching anything.......

I think I'm stretching....but strange that two tanks I did this to is not doing well.

So, what is my next step? The direction I'm thinking of going with the tank is a Ricordea and Zoanthid garden with the clowns.

I'm sad.

usually I'd say that unless you're "dumping" (not dripping) saturated kalkwasser I'd rule limewater out as the culprit but in this case it appears to have something to do with your problem.
Sorry to hear about the unfortunate developments.
Remember- gigantea anemones are probably the most challenging host anemone to maintain.

How did you added the kalk?
Kalk are extremely basic and need to slowly drip into the tank. Quickly adding kalk can wipe a tank out.

Thanks for your thoughts Gary. I'm not sure exactly what the factor(s) were. I really wish I can turn back time.

OrionN: I put a spoonful of kalk into a 2 gallon bucket (halfway), added RO/DI water. I poured half in the 45 and the other into the anemone cube. I poured it into the tank, as I thought that would have the most volume to buffer the topoff water.

I also did this to my QT/holding system. I didn't make a connection, but the 45 and the QT/holding system have this weird blackish cyano that is smothering everything. The elegance still has not extended it's tentacles since I did this. I have not done this again since then.

I keep trying to blow it off of coral and it just drapes itself over everything. It reminds me of the brown jelly problem some people were having with LPS.

In this case, it was something I haven't done before. I have always used B-Ionic to bring my pH and alk up, but was scared it would hurt the anemone. I thought the kalk would be less noxious. It should be, right?

If you pour the kalk into the tank then this is the reason why your tank is not doing well. Kalk is much more noxious than two part additive. Most of us added kalk drop by drop over 12 or 24 hrs. Saturated solution of kalk have pH in the 13 range.
You can pour in two part additive one right after the other, but not kalk.
Sorry about your tank. All you can do now is massive water change to remove the ammonia that come form organism that died in your tank.

Thank you kindly for that info. I really didn't know two part wasn't as strong, I thought it was super concentrated stuff. (I have been traumatized by chemistry so I tend to shy away from fully understanding)

The only experience I had with Kalk is in the kalk reactor, so I just tried to extrapolate from that.....what a terrible outcome.

Thank you for telling me that info. I sure do understand not to do that ever again. This really stinks.

Nanook: Thanks for asking, this particular one did not make it after my kalk incident.

I currently have 2 blues that are approx. 1 year old now:

Zowwwww!!! Man alive they look awesome.

Just when I finally convinced myself I can live without another carpet, ... now I really want to find a blue or purple!!! Oh well, at least I will be tempered by the fact that they pretty much show up at LFS's around here next to never.

Well, the two I ordered are coming from Dr. Mac and he said he had seven of them. I ordered a green and blue WYSIWYG and they looked awesome.
