sos frag basing out advise

Hi

My frags always seem to do well with growth but not in the upward direction instead laying wide carpets of base.

Is there something I could be missing or is this quite normal for frags?

Lighting is no issue I am running Ai's at very high intensity and the system is ULNS with vibrant colours.

generally quite normal, but it depends on the species. usually when SPS put down a large encrusting base first, they have a lot of fast upward growth and become larger or thicker colonies quicker. when building a skyscraper, you first must lay down a lot of concrete for the thing to sit on

And explanation is spot on. Typically they will encrust before they sprout out. Guess the coral is a bit of an engineer

Its this beige/sort of blue tipped frag thats going base crazy, getting the feeling I have an infant monster on my hands

The base has got to be 1" all around the plug now!

you havnt seen monster base until you've seen some efflo or slimer bases..

So true! My efflo has put out a base like 3" all the way around

I just took this picture. was a small frag when i got it the base is covering the entire top of the rock . to the point it is now climbing up my gorgonia.. and as you can see it really hasn't gone upwards yet.. have been waiting for that to happen but hasn't yet . it's been going on a year now.
