Soulpatch's 150 SC build

I will post up pics tonight but I spent yesterday afternoon finishing the water change station by plumbing in the 75 gallon tank. I still ened to run the AWC lines and such but I think right now I am in a good spot as I at least have both tanks functioning.

I need to swap out the SP4 I have on the smaller change station to a larger pump however. The SP4 struggles to push water up a few feet and across a room. I might grab another pan world.

Pics to come tonight.

You know I thought about plumbing up something with PEX and the copper crimp rings. I have the tools because I plumbed my entire house with PEX(great stuff)My concern was the COPPER crimp rings. I realize they are on the outside of the water, but its still a concern.

You can get the stainless crimps if you wish. I used the copper compression fittings but have at least 1/8" of pex beyond the fitting and used a total of 3 fittings I think. Really not concerned with it at all to be honest. I would say it is about the same amount of concern as having my water station in the utility room with the actual copper pipes above.

The only way for the copper rings to leach is to have a catastrophic leak somewhere and copper getting into something at that point is probably least of my worries.

That said it is set up that I could flip it to tubing should I wish. The pex has the cam lock fitting on the end and simply slides into the hole in cap of 75 drum. 20' or so of 1/2 tubing could do same thing if I really wanted but I had pex sitting around from my kitchen and decided to use it.

Well the AWC and revamp of the return nozzles might have to wait. I dislocated y shoulder last night playing hockey. Made a nasty glove save on a guy but he got the last laugh by me leaving the game unable to continue. Kind of need a shoulder as a goalie.

So that all said it looks as if things will be delayed. I figure surgery is on the docket this time.

Stopped at the LFS tonight and picked up a cool teal stylo and a rainbow mille. I will have pics tomorrow night after I clean the tank.

This weekend I am really hoping to run some lines for the AWC. I will have to see hw much I can do with one arm basically. I REALLY want it up and running though s that I can have a bit more stability in the tank.

I might even shoot a video on the cool magnetic stirrer I got and perhaps a tank walk through.

OK where to begin. I got my feet wet with my own salt tank last year getting a biocube. That thread is here: http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2476475

Suffice to say I quickly outgrew my biocube and started looking online for a larger tank. I finally decided on the 150 gallon SC Aquarium with an all wood stand. Within a week or so the tank and stand were delivered:

Here it is unboxed in my man cave:

And of course the requisite daughter in the tank pic:

The stand was great but I wanted to redo the interior. Having it sealed and painted white was important so I could see better and not worry as much about spills. So I taped off the "trim", sanded off the poly inside, sealed the corners and seams, and finally primed then painted white with appliance paint which formed a hard shell. LED lighting was added to light up the internals and allow me to see everything and neoprene on the floor for sound dampening:

I put in the sump (needed to remove the one support to get it in) and began to plan out my plumbing. I decided to go herbie and use the third hole in the overflow for my return. I know I want reactors, frag tank, and potentially other equipment to run off of the pump so I planned for a manifold as well. So thus far my sump and equipment are:

Trigger ruby elite 30 sump

fluval SP6 pump

life reef svs 24 skimmer

2 heaters

rw4 to be moved to the refugium area of sump

Pac Sun kore 5th doser

Building an obsession dosing containers with float sensor

Building an obsession ATO container with float sensor

Tunze ATO

Apex

Cabinet temp control fans

Obligatory get in the tank shot awesome

Plumbing was finished this weekend and water tested with success which was a huge relief. I need to finish the overflow drains and install the locline but otherwise tank is complete plumbing wise.

Marinepure blocks were added to the sump (and also a few to the biocube so I can seed from there)

Next steps:

I need to get in my rock from reef cleaners, set up my aquascape and put it into the tank. Then begin the process of moving over my controller to the big tank. I have a few suprises on how I am going to install all electrical in the stand which you can see later but it should be super neat and save a ton of space. In the tank I need to put in my WAV powerheads once I set up the rock scape and see where I need things aimed. Also awaiting my ATI T5 6x54 fixture to mount in my canopy along with 2 Kessil A360WEs I already have.

Finally I need to finish my AWC station in my utility room. I have 2 storage containers at this point but need to plumb them together and get an additional pump to make moving water back and forth easier. I did get the AWC module from Pac Sun for my doser so that will handle my daily water changes but I want pumps for large changes weekly to the tank.

My biocube once emptied of fish and corals will be emptied, drilled, and added to my big tank sump via my manifold as it switches to a frag tank. I have the IM coral frag rack so will use that in there and some marine pure plates to aid further in filtration for the system as a whole. And yes I have a separate QT set up which will house fish and corals in transfer as well as new purchases.

The tank was freshly filled this past weekend with RODI water for a water test and sits baren till I get in my rock. This thread will continue to develop as the build goes on much like my nano thread.

Plumbing looks amazing

Tank Location

Tank Location

Sorry to hear about your shoulder. Thanks for all your help thusfar! One question I have though is where is the location of you DP tank? Looks like its wither on main level or in basement? Just wondering if it was on concrete or a wood sub floor?

Custom Trigger Sump

Custom Trigger Sump

Hey Soulpatch,

I have looked through the thread but I cannot find the customization you did to your sump. I know you changed the color to white, but did you also make the skimmer section a little smaller and the refugium section a little bigger?
I live in Waco and am thinking about visiting triggersys to have them custom build me a sump as well. I really like the emerald 39, but wish the refugium was a little bigger and wanted to do a custom color as well...

Thanks in advance,

SC

Yeah so the sump itself is not really a 39. It is actually 40 inches long and either an inch or two wider then an emerald 39. I moved the return walls and the wall between skimmer and refugium to give myself a larger refugium. The probe holder holes are also wider then normal since I always hated that I had to feed the wire through the holder in my ruby. So all three holes are wide like the one in the middle typically is

Thanks for the reply, spoke with them and had wanted to do a face-to-face custom build, but they said they don't really do that. I will see how this works via email, may also take a look at their blemished section.

I had no issues working via email with them. I mean it wasn't rocket science. HA HA. push this wall out and move the baffles. Drill some wider holes and whatnot. Pretty simple process all in all.

White PVC fittings

White PVC fittings

Where did you get your gloss white PVC fittings? BRS only carries the black ABS or black schedule 80... Also without manifold (I plan on running a separate reactor/pump system), how much pipe did you order. I am thinking 3-4 of the 58" pipes for two drains and a return over an emerald 39 positions to get the drains as straight as possible.

Thanks,

SC

home depot would be my guess?

Yes I got them at HD but they are not normal white PVC fittings. I had to order them online and they were delivered. I also got the blue PVC from them as well and remainder of my valves from Amazon as they were on sale...

Search Formufit on Home Depot. Amazon sells it as well though I couldn't find the fittings I needed in there in white.
