Southdown Alternative @ HD - Pulverized Limestone

Hey folks. I have ran across some info on the DFWMAS board talking about an alternative folks are using to Southdown nowadays. It is a Pulverized Limestone sold under a brand called Pavestone. Here is a link to a useful thread over there about it.

They claim it to sell for $4 / 50# bag. Not bad, eh? I wonder if one might be able to use it, mixing with some real aragonite. I have no idea how porous this substrate is.

Anyone heard of it?

Here is another good thread: link

From those pics, it looks to me like the stuff may work. I think I might, however, want to sift it first to get out some of the larger chunks. I prefer a finer grain of sand.

Do some research and find out if any of the Pros have commented on it yet? I'd like to know more about the porosity of this stuff. Now, if I just had some of it and a microscope... :)

Looking at photos in that thread, it looks pretty good. If you buy a bag and the grains are mostly white, it is aragonite anyway. If it has an abundance of gray or other colors in it, it is contaminated with clays, silicates or other components of limestone. Some limestone is almost completely composed of aragonite (like the stuff from Florida or Hawaii). The stuff from here has a lot more contaminants.

I'll see if I can find some of this stuff in our state and test it out in various ways and report back. The hard part will be finding it.

Not sure you are correct, there, Travis. From what I hear, it is much easier to find then Southdown. That would rock. :)

Given what it is, the best place to look for it would be in the paver section of HD (generally outdoors in the garden section, I know this area too well). Pavestone makes pavers and retaining wall blocks, so imagine the intended use for this material is for the substrate to lay these materials.

After I feed and water the rabbits I am headed to HD and L to see if I can find it.

Sounds great to me especially since I am dumping all the sand.

If there is any difficulty getting this stuff in OKC, I know it is available down here in the Dallas area. I can get some and bring it up sometime...

Since I had the baby with me he was hot and not in a good mood so I will check tonight at L in my town.

I will let you know what I find, if I don't find it tonight I will check either tomorrow by calling of the stores or by driving by them Sat on the way to the OKAA meeting.

Would you be willing to bring me a bag if possible? I want to try to sort it out by grain size, do some vinegar testing, some photos, etc.

Yep. But it will be a good while before I can get up there. I might be able to do that testing for you. Send me an email with your thoughts.

It would almost be cost efficient if you picked it up if we can't get it here and have one of us go to Ardmore and pick it up for everyone.

That would not be a problem, I am not a big fan of paypal since it takes out fees but I always send over so the fees come out of the extra. Other then that it is so convenient.

Quoted from chrisk on DWFMAS.com...its made by Pavestone in a brown bag...

I had to look at several stores to find it. The HD in plano at 75 and 15th had it.

This HD is 2 minutes from the LFS I work at. :) Imma bring some home with me
