Southdown Alternative @ HD - Pulverized Limestone

ive been using the homedepot pulverized limestone for the past 2.5 years with no problems. It seems to be a seasonal item available in the spring

Eddy i wouldnt sweat the color of the portland because A) in my experiance it tends to "whiten" quite a bit after curing and B) (also in my experiance) it seems to "grayen" in the tank reguardless of the color of portand and it also seems to coraline over a bit faster than the rest of the FIJI I have in my tank.

I have a few broken pieces that I pulled out of the curing bin and they are much whiter than they were originally, now that they're dry.

405ndn: I wouldnt worry about using a filter for rinsing it just go with the standard bucket method. How do you plan to use it?

Its just such a messy process, but rewarding[/QUOTE]

I agree, Im trying to work out some pannels now and am playing with making some "volcanos" to hide plumbing / overflow's. definately couldnt do this with rock.

heres a few pics I grabbed on a recent trip to HD for those who are looking for this stuff

I picked up a bag here in NW Arkansas last weekend. I'm using it as a filler for my 75g.

It is dirty - I rinsed a small portion for almost an hour. I then dumped it in. Clouded the tank overnight. Still getting some sandstorms, but nothing too bad.

I personally like the color - it is about as white as the sand that it is my tank now.

i haven't open mine yet but going to build a screen box with 2x4s to pour it on to wash. i think that would be easier . and also if i set up the 150 later i will already have it to clean with

I took screening material(like for a stormdoor) put it over my recycle bin from the city(since it has drain holes in the bottom) and poured some of the sand on top. I then ran the garden hose over it until the water was relatively clear and repeated the process. It got rid of the dust and most of the very fine particles so when I dumped it into the tank it cleared up in a few hours. I lost alot of weight though. When I was through it filled a 5 gal. bucket about 3/4 full.

It looked fine. The water cleared in less than 12 hours and very little stirred up when I smoothed out the bottom. Actually the stuff that selled at the bottom of the container after the water drain out looks better. If I can find a finer mesh I may strain that. It reminds me of very fine beach sand, like the stuff you find settled just outside the surf line on the beach.
