Southdown Sand

Anyoneknow if there is any southdown playsand anywhere on LI. I'm in nassau county.

Need to replace my 110 gallon tank that is leaking. After removing all the fish, corals and rock the sand is a mess. I would like to replace most of it. Was a mix of oolitic and some southdown. Before I added the southdown some of the other sand had already fused together. Lots of detritis in there too.

Southdown Sand, isn't that some sort of Urban Legend?? good luck finding it.. ;)

No, it actually did exist once. Sadly it has gone the way of the dinosaurs.

HD sell kolorascape (sp) I have it in my tank and have experienced no issues. Do a search here for a few discussions. The neysayers base it on what they think should happen.

I know, I was just funnin
I have it (SouthDown)in my 55 gal, got it from "wood kingdom" in farmingdale.
now in my new tank I'm using Seachem Meridan . It is SUPER FINE! purchased it from Cindy at JC AQUATICS. only put a "dusting " of it for looks in my 120. it costs aprox .60 /lb.

Thanks for the info Chuck. Just finished getting 4 inches of sand out of the leaky 110. I thought the sand was relatively clean when the tank was full. Wow, It was rank full of detritus mud. I am thinking BB is not a bad idea. I can always add sand later if I really don't like it.

A DSB can't function if it's not maintained. If you are not prepared to take care of a DSB, you're better off without one in your system. It won't just "not work," it will slowly poison your tank.

Larry,

What do you mean by "maintained"?

A DSB needs critter influx (is that an actual term?) to work. The sand has to be slowly moved and shifted to help prevent clumping. This is not something for you to do with your hand, or a stick, you need pods and other micro critters to do it for you. Counting on your tank to produce a continious flow of these critters is a bad idea. I think IPSF sells DSB innoculation kits.
