They are beneficial detrivores. Their population is regulated by the availability of food. If you are a heavy feeder you'll have more worms.
 
They aren't likely to be a problem. If you majorly overfeed, you may end up with an infestation, but if you're feeding at a fairly normal level they're harmless. Even an infestation is only a problem visually, aside from the fact that their feelers can sometimes bother corals.
 
I agree with the others. Their population will be regulated by the amount of food available.
I had them in several small tanks with Dwarf Seahorses. With all the feeding I did they never became a problem.

Give me a few months and I may ask to purchase some from you for an upcoming DSH tank.
