Spearers vs. Smashers!

Comparing these two different types of Mantis Shrimp and their similarities and differences is quite interesting. Based on mode of attack, I would guess that generally speaking Spearers are faster than Smashers. But I can't say for sure. Maybe smashing types are just as fast if not faster. Maybe they don't reach their speed potential since their prey tend to be slower and not as fast as the softer bodied organisms.

But what about other features?

Eyesight?
Intelligence?
Strength?
Behavior?
Hardyness?

What do yall think? Would Spearers have better eyesight since capturing prey might require better accuracy? Would Smashers tend to be stronger since they move rocks and rubble around versus creating a sand burrow?

I guess what I'm trying to say is that not all mantis species are created equal and comparing/contrasting their adaptations and features would help to better understand stomatopods!

There are about 350 species of spearers and over 100 smashers. You can't easily generalize to functional group, but by all of your criteria, smashers would generally come out on top. They are faster, their eyes are more complex, they learn more from their environment, they are stronger, their behavior is more complex and they tend to be more robust.
