SPS and tank longevity and acclimation

Hey guys, please remind me of the various acclimation procedures for various acropora, montipora etc....
Used to we just would temp acclimate, open the bag and pull them out, let them slime for a few minutes and then place in the tank. Who is doing what now? drip? etc...

Also, How long have each of you waited before placing SPS corals of any kind in a new system? Once its cycled, provided the equipment is in working order, have you started placing pieces or do you wait a few months?

Quite honestly, I usually get my SPS from a trusted source and I know what's going on.

I just temperature acclimate since the systems I buy from aren't too different from mine. Occasionally I'll drip acclimate and what not, then placing the piece on the sand end and moving up weekly.

Now my system is young, not too crazy yet. I think when I get my system much more mature, I'm going to buy a frag tank for grow out/QT

Remember, it's ALWAYS better to be safe than sorry. Though if you even just dip prior to placing in your tank, you should be fine. Just check everything out up close.

I would second advice given by Hentz. Always from a reputable source.

As far as dipping, I have gotten on the Bayer Advanced bandwagon since last year. I have had good luck with all SPS at a 5ml to Cup for 10 minutes. I even did a Hawkins and it did fine.

David could you elaborate on this Bayer Advanced bandwagon? and Hawkins? Ive been out of the hobby for the last 4-5 years so these terms/methodology is totally new to me.

I've used this exact Bayer dip insecticide and was experimenting on my red dragon and Hawkins Acroporas that had red bugs. I used 10ml per 2 cups for 10 minutes and every 2 minutes, I turkey basted the acro a few times. Bye-bye red bugs!!!

Lol I had the same reaction when I first heard and read about it. Trust me, it's very effective!!

Just make sure you wear gloves and goggles and only use the containers and the turkey baster during this procedure!

I use coral RX and MedicCoral (brightwell stuff - its an iodine based dip) separately. I keep the new additions on a rack away from everything else but I don't have a qt specifically for new additions.

I only temp acclimate and have never dripped.

I have been using the bayer dip as well. It absolutely works. I have used it with sps, lps, and zoas with great results. I few months back I got a frag of an expensive gold torch. I noticed when it was not doing well that it had hundreds of tiny bugs on it. after 10 minutes in the dip Ihe bugs were gone and have not come back. I was apprehensive at first as well but now it is the only dip I use. And the stuff goes a long way.

I've only used bayer on SPS but I've heard LPS and softies tolerate it as well. Oh and only use Bayer as a dip not in-tank treatment like interceptor!

Those work, but Bayer is specifically for bugs, if you trust your source or for another reason are not worried about bugs you could skip the bayer dip, although since it doesnt hurt the coral I dont really see a downside to doing it all the time.

I use Revive for all corals, and then Bayer if I suspect bugs or the source the coral came from. Revive is just an antisceptic so it helps with fresh frags to prevent infections and so forth, but it doesnt remove bugs.
