SPS dominated tank in Waikiki INTENSE PICS!!! BEWARE

Delbeek left behind a legacy there, hopefully he is doing great things in San Fran.

There are MANY very skilled and talented people at teh Waikiki aquarium that will continue to make that a wonderful place. Delbeek may have been one of the most known (along with Carlson, amongst others), but that place will not be lost without him, and I would hardlycall the Waikiki legacy "his".

Here's one of the tanks at the Maui Ocean Center, quite impressive in it's own right, however I was on the wrong islands that trip, so couldn't visit the Waikiki. I did finally manage to upload my pics

However the outdoor tanks were not full of reefs, but were impressive in their own right.

Might be too big for peoples screens.

If anyone wants to see other pictures, too many to post, and I'm not trying to hijack the thread feel free to look through my album.

Nice. I've been to the public aquarium in Maui. It looks like I need to plan a trip to Oahu now.

the tank inside is about 5,000-5,500 gallons, i forget which. 10 hp chiller outside. the clams are the oldest clams in captivity. >25 years, and abosolutely due the name giant clams. i think he told me 250 or 375 pounds each.

the tank has a large skylight over it supplemented by a few thousand watts of HD lights.

real nice. i wonder how they deal with rain. wouldnt that affect the water quality and also the evaporation.

I've got the exact same question!!

Anyone?

I haven't been there, but its possible they just constantly pump in new saltwater from the rather large reservoir of NSW they have sitting nearby at a rate that's fast enough to negate any changes in salinity due to evaporation or rainwater...

i asked Charles Delbeek and he told me it is an open system and so has constant influx of saltwater they pump from underground wells.

in one of those pics that clam is as big as the little kid in front of the tank. Anyone have any idea where they found the blue squamosas? Ive never seen any for sale with some of those colors they have.

Waikiki aquarium is always nice to visit, I have been a few times & still enjoy the aquarium, yes that outside clam tank & sps tank are awesome, I would love to bring some of clams home!
