SPS-Red Bugs-Bayer

So I found red bugs on an Acro. I'm going to pull it out and dip it with Bayer insecticide. How much should I use per gallon and how long should I do it? I've heard many different mix ratios but everyone is pretty constant about a fifteen minute dip length followed by a fifteen minute clean water dip before reintroducing it to the tank.

I've had the piece for a year, fully encrusted so the the whole rock is getting dipped.

I have over twenty, this is the only one that the bugs are visible on. If they're on any others (which they probably are) they're not affecting them. The one I see them on has lost polyp extension and some coloration.

I have pretty close ratio also 10 ml to 8oz tank water.15 min dip, unless smooth skin, then 10 minutes. There are good in tank treatments for red bugs , if you have to go that route.

Bayer doesnt always work for red bugs. The amount you use however is not all that critical. Turn the water a milky translucent white and thats fine. Interceptor works much better and can be used in the tank.

I seam to be getting that ratio pretty consistently. I'll give it a go tomorrow. Left pic (14k) is from a couple months ago, right pic (20k) was yesterday.

Doesn't Interceptor kill all crustaceans?

In my experience it certainly kills acro crabs.Never had any other crustaceans except for those. Star fish are unaffected, pods are either unaffected or rebound so fast I never noticed a decline.

Bayer does work, I just found it does not kill all the red bugs all the time. Interceptor does but at the price of most crustaceans. Interceptor also takes care of all the coral at once. A few treatments a few weeks apart usually gets rid of the problem.

If their on one their on others as well. I just went through this myself. Spotted them on my icefire only saw a couple. Treated tank with interceptor and there where hundreds on dozens of colonys. Just treat your tank and get it over with.

I agree with not trusting Bayer to kill all red bugs. I often see posts of people getting red bugs and thinking the Bayer would prevent them from entering their tank. Treat the tank with Interceptor and then you will see how much happier the corals are when your alk needs to be increased.

So that would be 320ml, about 1 1/3 cups in a gallon. Seems like a lot.

I guess it would depend on the size of the frags. Mine are generally super tiny so I only do about 4 cups of water with 80ml. But yes, it's a lot! The good news is its crazy cheap and I have never had an adverse effect on corals like I have in the past with Revive or CoralRX. From what I've heard Bayer kills bad stuff better than the over the counter dips. So far my tank is pest free.
