Is a 1000w heater an over kill? or it wont hurt?

For teh money it costs for a 100W, you might as well get 2 smaller ones and have a backup in case one fails.

Well, this heater is in new condition and VERY cheap..Im not gonna be paying BRAND NEW price (what it originally costs). If its a steal..will it be ok?

Tank size x (3w per gallon) divided by (2 heaters). That is what you want.

Marc,

I just want to dedicate 1 outlet of my RK ll to a heater...so im guessing ill go with that 1000w..its CHEAP! :D

How many gallons is that tank again?

What makes you think the RK2 can handle that much wattage?

Way too much heater. You seriously risk cooking your tank. I would just install two 150w heaters. If one sticks on, it won't have the ability to overheat the water.

Tagging along...

his main point is if something goes wrong then it wont fry the tank IMO i agree 100% on using the two 159's and not risking anything.
i had this happen once on a 55 gal.. man not pretty.. i think a seal had worn out or something cause i came home to soup.. and since then i have always used two smaller heaters

Youre right Marc..ill just do that..

What about a single 250w?

Getting one 250W heater defeats the whole purpose of getting two 150W of heaters. If one fails then the other can handle heating your tank to the desired temperature.

Or at least prevent it from cooling off too quickly, giving you time to figure out what is going on.

I agree with the two 150w heaters. I learned my lesson the hard way. The one 300w heater I had went bad and never noticed. Temp dropped like crazy, only lost a few frags. Since then I run two just in case.

UPDATE:

Well, things have gone south. I had a leak somewhere in the plumbing that i couldnt find. Tried to take the pump out..broke the sump...Im sure you can imagine the rest..sooooo this %@#%$$ sucks!

I guess this is going to take longer than i thought..bleh..
