Sps stn

Hello all,

I have been keeping a successful sps dominated tank for over two years now. In that time I have learned much about the trials and tribulations of an sps dominated reef and for the most part have weathered many storms well. Unfortunately recently I began to notice stn on the bases of a few of my acro colonies and the condition seems to be spreading to other colonies and advancing on the colonies that are showing original signs of the damage.

I have made a few changes over the past few months and I list them here.

-began a small hob 2.5 gallon fuge and grow cheato
-began dosing amino acids and potassium (discontinued once STN was evident for fear that this was the cause)
-began using less gfo and gac actually am using the recommended amounts now from over use before.

Now, I have noticed that there was a heating issue that could be the casue but I am not sold on the notion yet. About two months ago I moved my heater into the refugium. I am thinking that the light above the fuge was heating the sensor in the heater itself and not allowing it to turn on to warm the tank. I didn't notice that my tank during the off hours was plummeting to 73.5 degrees. When I was around to view the tank and thought to check the temp it was daylight and the temp always seemed to be 78-80 degrees.

I have also battled low alk and am measuring between 5 and 7 dkh daily. Also could be the cause of the stn so I am trying to get the numbers up to better levels of 9-10. I have just tonight begun this battle.

Now, about my husbandry habits. The tank is a 46 gallon bow. After you factor out the 80 lbs of LS and 62 lbs of LR there is roughly 32 gallons of water. I perform a 15% water change religiously every saturday. I blow the rocks off prior to the w/c, completely clean my skimmer body and scrape the walls.

For the most part and except for my alk issue, my chemistry is spot on.

sg 1.026
calcium 460
dkh 5-7
ph 8.0
mg 1450
ammonia 0
no2 0
no3 0
po4 0
actinics run 2pm-12am
duel 175 watt halides run 4pm-11pm
moon lights run 12am-2pm

So, I ask for help from the pros. I am starting to lose hope as I see this advancing. Thank you in advance ladies and gents and I hope to hear from you all soon as to what this could be and what I can do to save my tank. I can provide recent pics and STN detailed macro shots if you think it will help.

You should definently frag the corals just in case. Also between the alk and temp issues the corals have been under alot of stress so that is probably the reason for stn.

I also have the heater in the fuge and now that you say it the lights go on when its night when the temp dips, gonna have to move it before it starts to get cold

Wow!!! This is almost a mirror image of the problem I had back in April. I'm just now getting things back on track.

First of all, are you sure (100%) that your phosphate is undetectable? Mine was undetectable yet the base of my sps colonies was receding and they were losing color. From what I 've read and witnessed myself, this could be 3 things:

Pests/Alkalinity spikes/Phosphates

I also had an alkalinity as low as yours. Has it always been this low? What salt are you using as well. If your alkalinity is this low...you probably have a hard time maintaining coralline algae. If it's dying off in droves, I would slowly start raising dKH to 9/10. Once I switched to Reef Crystals my problem slowly started to correct itself. Also, some have reported that their sps suffered upon GFO introduction. Take a break from GFO for a while and see what happens.

Hi all, my Po4 is undetectable with my kit but I know the pitfalls with these test kits. My cheato grows like mad however so if that is any indication of no3 and or Po4 that may be proof positive.

I have used IO since day 1 and have never had an issue. I also began testing my make up water recently just to be sure that my chemistry is on target when doing a water change and it is fine.

One more thing that I neglected to mention was that about 3 months ago I also began using BRS 2 part switching up from B-Ionic. Not sure if this could play a part in the situation. I had always had an issue in maintaining alk and my numbers were always around 5-6ish daily.

I will snap some pics of the stn and post them to this thread but attached is a pic of my tank from about 2 weeks ago. Thanks all and please keep the suggestions flowing.http://img825.imageshack.us/img825/8753/reefftsrightandleftaug2.jpg

Temp swings and alk imbalance are my guesses. You gotta keep your alk up, daily dosing with all that SPS is tough, you might want to pick up a BRS dosing pump to automate it a little.

im taggin along on this one, been havin the same issue. heres what i contribute though...

i too was suffering from low alk, and alk swings. along with precipitation. i bought some BRS dosers a month and a half ago though, so the waiting game is on to see if that helps, so far, ive been keeping my alk around 9-10 daily. and its sweet because smaller more frequent doses use less alk too!

Unfortunatley, that is what I am seeing as well. Very slow progression but when it is spread out over many colonies it appears devastating. Good luck with your battle. Now, you have been dripping for a month. Has there been any sign of recovery yet?

perhaps a slow down, but its still going slowly. Im setting up a new tank this next month and i think i will chop the colonies in hope to stop it

Hi all, here they are. I came home tonight to notice this damage now on a new tort colony. It is driving me crazy!!!! Ideas...???http://img685.imageshack.us/img685/5706/stn5.jpg

This was the only pic I could upload because Image Shack and my MAC are not playing nicely. This is now taking place on most of my sps colonies.

Thanks again all. I wanted to update this thread and let you know my current situation. I bumped my dkh up to 9 from the chronic low of 5-6 and have held it there for about a week now. Well within two days of hitting 9, I have seen a stop of the stn and new growth over the stn'd white bases. I was able to hit 9 by using my standard BRS 2 part dosing AND the addition of daily dosing of baked baking soda in the amount of 2 tsp dissolved in ro/di water. Thanks again all.

It looks like what happened to my colony recently. Turned out to be a bristle worm munching at it at night. Next time turn off all lights, including moonlights. Wait 1/2-1hr and use a flashlight. Not saying that it might be alk burn, but I find that alk burn will also make everything else look "blah" in the aquarium.

interesting hope your bump to 9 dkh is the key as mine was dropping over the month from 9.5 to 7.8 and I noticed some stn ..now that i am back up to the norm it has stopped also..thanks for posting
Roger
