SPS Targeted Feeding Macro Video Experiment

stopping carbon dosing cold turkey, COULD cause some Issues ... all those bacteria u were culturing are not going to die off and .... but seems like your skimmer took care of that .

if you plan on not dosing start anymore, Id start another plan for nutrient control ... to avoid algae in DT.

Very true statement and good advice.

What I've done is not change the stones in a significant amount of time. From my brief searches on the zeovit forum, that's the proposed solution. I still stir the reactor and what not, but I haven't changed out the media in about 6 months now. With my skimmer, which does a very good job of pulling out organics (which it doesn't seem like there are many of) it has worked fine so far. I don't fear a bacteria die off at this point, but it was something I definitely considered when experimenting with reducing my zeovit supplements.

I have been feeding the papone two to three times a week at lights out. I haven't noticed any difference in anything. The skimmer doesn't really go nuts, I leave it off for 1 hour and it's fine. I don't think I put enough in my mix. And I am scared to up the dosage becsuse of the sugar. I will probly keep it going for a while and see what happens.

sirreal, Thanks for turning me on to this thread. I hope that doing this will bring back my corals from the brink. Here I'm so concerned about skimmers working right and other equipment/tank maintenance that I never thought that keeping my tank at an ULN level means that I was starving the corals. I guess I always thought the fish feces was food enough (I do not blame them for not eating it!) I enjoy feeding anyways so I hope this recipe does the trick.
Thanks
Dave

BTW I have moved my ASW making to work where my bigger tank is so water changes take no more then 10 minutes now and will try to follow a daily water change routine. I pray that these better husbandry practices will remedy the errors of my past!

Just made my first batch of papone today. Followed the recipe with exception that I did not add the red algea, just the spirulina. I have to say I made the fatal error of cleaning out the blender with hot water and I got a good wif of the mixture that I will rename "fishsnotbabypoop" and I had a wee bit of lunch come back to pay me a visit. Seriously I do not have a weak stomach, I used to TA gross anatomy in grad school, but the smell and consistency of this stuff was a new pleasure. I'm sure glad it will be frozen next time I touch it. Can't wait to throw it it the tank tomorrow. I have all LPS and softies at this point but if successful I might be temped to go to the LFS and get a $15 sps frag started in quarantine soon. Technically the tank is set up for SPS butI'm very gunshy about difficult corals since starving a bunch of them to death. I'm hopeful this stuff will help.

Ok soI have 2 feelings under my belt now. first time I broadcast feed the tank and watched what happened.....nothing. I was very discouraged not to see any response from any corals. Last night I target fed...WOW. Blastomosa practically turned inside out. Ricordia folded right up and alveopora was even actively feeding which I had never seen before. Up till now I had been using other prepared foods and have not seen this response. I am definitely going to get a small SPS frag and give it a go again.

****HERE IS SOMETHING I PUT TOGETHER UNDER MY LOCAL REEF CLUBS PAGE****
I think thi smay be the best food invented and i will be using it very soone and will post videos as always.
enjoy
Hello my fellow brothers

In my quest to provide the best possible living environment to my fish, small polyp stony corals and LPS, I have decided to embark on creating a modified version of the Italian food called pappone. I have had some amazing results with it but came across a French video that was just mind blowing of the results they are achieving with this food. The idea is to elevate you normal parameters so that it is available for the coral to consume as needed when needed.
Also it creates a living environment within the tank that is a natural filtration system that not only cleans and purifies the water but also feeds the entire eco system.
Below is the recipe that took some time to translate and decipher to come up with a dosing amount.

I have all but one ingredient and for some reason it is no longer available in the entire world LOL I have searched high and low and can’t find it. Does anyone in the club have some cyclop ezee? I had a small can and cannot find it. I have no idea what I did with it and now I need it.
If you have some let me know and we can make arrangements for selling or trade.

Below is the ingredients and I have no problem making this for the club if we can find a place to make it. It cost about $25 bucks each batch for 800mls to 900mls depending on the size of the clams and shrimps. So if the club has interest in setting up a play date let me know LOL

enjoy the video simply amazing >>>> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2MfzYwE6lv8

5 Clams medium to large
5 mussels
5 to 6 oysters depends on size
5 shrimp or (prawns) uncooked RAW no tails or shells prawns are better
1 Reef booster from prodibio
1 anchovies very rich in omega 3
Fauna Marin Ultra LPS Grow & Color Medium/Regular Pellet < for LPS
Half a bag of Reef pearls 40 grams or 1.41 size 5-200 MICRONS < for LPS
spirulina flake powder 10 g of Red Algae (Palmaria palmata; Bisck uses Julian Sprung's brand)and/or 10 g of Spirulina, 10 g of Nori (spirulina is what Bisck prefers)
250 g of fish eggs (the smaller the better and should be a saltwater type of fish)
2 teaspoon of Cyclop-eeze
250 g of mysis shrimp
250 g Artemia newly hatched brine shrimp
2 ml of vodka 80 proof clear not flavored
1 teaspoon sugar or 4 grams
200 mls of RO/DI WATER
Mixing in a blender : Methods: Make SURE that all ingredients are the freshest possible and DO NOT use frozen foods (unless it is impossible for you). Make sure everything "live" is rinsed and cleaned before putting it into the blender. Put all the ingredients into the blender and blend for 5 min, wait 2 min for it to cool, 5 more min blending, 2 min of waiting again, then finally another 5 min of blending (the pausing is so that the solution doesn't get too hot and "cook" from the heat of the blender/blades). Pour into cube forms (approx 10 mL each).
Place in freezer or small cubes and feed up to two times a week 5 to 10 ml for every 200 liters or for every 52.83 gallons of water volume.

******BELOW IS SOME MORE INFORMATION FROM THE original PAPPONE******
Procedure: One hour prior to turning off your lights, you have the option of adding Amino acids to the tank*. (For example, 11pm Halides off, add AAs, 12am, actinics off, then add pappone). Take off the cup of your skimmer, but leave the skimmer running (so you dont have a massive drop in O2 levels overnight)<<<< I DON'T DO THIS AND HAVE HAD NO ISSUES AT ALL. After the lights are off, start with only a A ¼ of a cube per WEEK for every 400 L of tank water (approx 100 gallons). Be sure to measure NO3 and PO4 the next morning so that these parameters don't spike after feeding. You can reduce the amount fed if you are having nutrient problems. Also dont forget to put the skimmer cup back on the next morning before the lights go back on. AGAIN I DON'T DO THIS I SEE NO NEED

*If everything is going well. It is good to wait and see how the tank is doing for awhile before trying this. The whole point here is that you don't want to change anything too fast, because nothing good happens quickly in this hobby. (Another method to grind up amino acid pills in the next batch of food; however Bisck found that it sometimes causes diatom outbreaks in his tank

Wow this has been a thrill of a read! I have a very severe allergies to shell fish so I can not take advantage of pappy's food but I last nite used some cycolpese. I used a health dose of it and did as instructed with pumps off etc. I did notice all zoanthids eat bc they were all closed! I noticed that setosa wilts a filament of food as well as some of the monti's. The lps's were doing eating as well. I think cyclopese is too big for acro's but will added and monitor phos and nitrates. With my allergy would my sps's benefit from oyster feast and say Korallen-Zucht ZEOvit Coral Vitalizer Coral Food?

Thanks Michael. I've read through this quite a bit. I have my reservations on Pappone feeding for a couple reasons in my frag tank. First the sugar additive has somewhat of an unmeasurable impact that leaves me uncertain and second mixing mussles clams etc all of which are by no means native to the reef it may as well be any blend of any seafood it just so happens that shellfish are widely available and freeze well. particular concern is feeding small frags in a qt with no means of nutrient export other than water changes and heavy skimming. Appreciate the lead though I like that thread and plenty of evidence in support of feeding established display tanks and your tank is testament to this. I likely will try pap on my DT when the corals are ready. DT is running biopellet frag tank is not.

The sugar is not needed, it can be helpful but it certainly is not the important ingredient. I have not put sugar in my mix in a very long time. Particle size and ingredient mix is more important than anything else, at least IME.

I think the sugar is to preserve the ingredients and at the same time adds another source of carbon to the tank. Is it needed I do t know but I do add it to my mix and have had great resuls. But my new recipe is even better and as you can see from then last video I posted it works great. Am reluctant to share because it has sugar and vodka and I don't want people to dose carbon into there systems. But it's working great.

Good job Michael. The hard part is always figuring out how much you can safely feed. I feed a lot more but it took over a year to get to the point that I am at. Starting slow is always advisable as it takes time for the life in the tank to catch up to the food import.

Hi,
Can you comment more on how one can add more "life" to the tank? My tank was started from dry rock roughly two years ago and I believe I may benefit from more life in my tank. What can I do to accomplish this?

Thanks,
Pat

my opinion has been that sps will catch the tiny particulate food in their mucous coating and the polyps will pull in that layer of mucous and digest the food caught in it. polyps will only close if the have caught a large substantial piece of food that it can actually attempt to fit. otherwise they will be working on pulling in the net of mucous. that is why i think small particulate food like reef roids are the best.
