St. Louis LFS

I have been to Gateway Aquatics on Telegraph Road and it was really nice. The store is small but stocked to the max. I spent hours out front deciding what to get then the guy asked if I had been in the back yet and oh boy ..the back beats the front hands down...so much to see. The guy working that day was really nice too and helpful. I always try to plan my turkey hunting trips to north Missouri around when they are open so I can come back through there and shop..

It's no fun to hunt turkey at kroger...I have to leave Kroger to go hunting...you guys need to try a spring hunt in North Missouri with the snow falling ...you would be hooked for life. I used to deer and rabbit hunt but spring season turkey hunting is my favorite...yep seems like aquariums fit into the scheme too if you plan your hunting trips around when the LFS are open on your return trip...and pack an extra cooler for your livestock in case you bag a bird...

I second that BJ! nothing like hearing an early morning gobble to get your blood pumping! I enjoy Reefing but I'm ADDICTED to turkey hunting.

Well folks -
I ended up going to the reportedly “good” LFS in the greater St. Louis area. I came loaded for bear with two Styrofoam coolers. (They came back home empty.)

All the store owners, managers & personnel were very nice and knowledgeable.

Planet Reef http://www.planetreefllc.com had some really cool sharks, (which I obviously have a personal fondness for), but I no longer have a predator tank, so I couldn’t do anything with them. (But they were cool!)

And yes, Chad Smith at Gateway http://www.zomania.com/ was nice and had a great selection of Zoo’s and Ricordia. What I really liked about Gateway, was the diversity of size of their inverts. If you want a small $20 starter frag, no problem. “Buy 3, get 2 Free" was their deal for $25 Rics.) And if you wanted a $125. seven-headed Frogspawn, he had that too.

Bottom-line:
In the end though, all the "stories" I’ve heard about how great the LFS in the Big City of St. Louis were, left me unmoved.

Comparatively speaking, I think our local stores: Kermit’s http://www.kermitsreef.com/ and especially MemFish http://www.memfish.net/ boast “as good” - if not “better” selections, health and display tank cleanliness & presentations for us patrons.

So… hat’s off to our own LFS owners - Dave & Richard! “Thanks” for your on-going support.

There’s no place like home, Toto.

I can second that! Without their help I would still be rolling around in the dark. Thanks again Richard and Dave.

I've traveled all over the country with work and when I am in a new town I always check out the LFS to see what other places carry and I will have to say that both Kermits and Memfish are as good if not exceed any other LFS I have ever been to, Kudos to all ya'll

Weird while I too love Kermit's and memfish because they gave me my start in reefing I like visiting STL stores when visiting my parents.

Both of the places you mentioned I've been to while in STL and I was really blown away with both stores- could have been an off week??

But I think you should have made the trip out to Clayton Pet Emporium- one of the finest, classiest shops I've EVER visitied!

Clayton Pet Emporium is one of the best here in StL. Its where I do alot of my shopping for livestock. Marine Solutions out in St Charles is also nice, as is Saltwater Island. There are several others that have been doing good things recently, but those are the ones I get to most often. If you didnt check those stores out, you really didnt see what all we have.

I wish we had as many nice stores as the Chicago area does...but St Louis is a smaller city.

Hope you enjoyed your visit here.

Nick

Don't get me wrong Nick, all the stores were nice, and the people knowledgeable, like I said.

I guess my expectation (after hearing all the hype), was higher than what I actually experienced. I was expecting something marginally better than what we already have, and I didn’t get that, is all.

I did get to Marine Solutions (nice selections), but not Clayton. I’ll look them up next time.

But I really got homesick (for Memphis) THIS week, when I came to New York City and dropped in on some of THESE pet stores up here. OMG!!!!! Talk about Prices?!?!?!!?!!

These people are nuts with their pricing.
1-1/2 inch Regal Tangs were $79.
Purple Fire Fish = $54.99 !!
3" Blue Tang = $259.99
Red Hawk = $74.99
Hell, the 2" GSP frags were $59. GSP!
Gorgonians = $60
Red Mushrooms = $20 per HEAD!
(AND I'm not even in Manhattan!!!!!)

You’d almost think these folks never heard of FedEx or UPS Next Day Air (pardon the shameless plug for the non-local, good people in Brown; They are my #1 Airline customer and the reason I’m in NY this week.)

…….And I’ll get back to Chicago soon enough (My home town). I only recently started hitting up the reef stores there (again) because my salt water experience has been on a seven-year hiatus, since I moved to Memphis, and left my tank behind. But I’ll look around Chi-Town, you can count on that.

And… of course, having some “good” Pizza up there. :)
