Starboard Reef is up and running

Back awhile ago we were discussing turkey basting the rock to put particles in suspension. Some were saying that they would put the baster in a hole and squirt the water "into" the rock and seeing detritus coming out. I ask this, wouldn't this forced water disrupt the denitrifying layers within the LR, as disrupting a DSB would?

I was asking that question as I alway's wondered about it. The answer's were getting detritus out any way is beneficial. But it does seem logical to me. One thing I can say is I never had a problem doing it. Disturb a DSB and that's a whole other story.

I doubt you'll have denitrifying layers in the amassing detritus. You want that waste out of your tank, one way or another. Pumping in fresh water wont get into the core of the rock, but it will flush out the nasty stuff you want out of your system.

How often does everybody blast off their rock? I use a PH once a week and blast it all off before my water change, is this perty standard?

Thanks,
Whiskey

I use a maxi-jet about once every two weeks on my 120.

I'm actually, thinking about cutting back on rock blasting and skimming to encourage algae to grow.

I've got a major problem with rhodophytes, and I'm going to try to fight fire with fire. If I can encourage other algae to grow I'm hoping it will choke the rhodophytes out.

If one were to look around, one would find Bomber and the others on others sites under different aliases.......still posting... ;-)

I hope you are not confusing Bomber with Boomer. They are two very different people.

I believe, given what has happened recently, Jerel (Bomber) is taking a well-deserved break. Please let's stop with the speculation on where he is and what he is doing.

If it involves doughnuts, we know the answer.

Let's keep to the topic of this thread, please. Any want to post some pictures of the BB tank?

I'll post a few. I went BB about 8 months ago and cooked the rocks at the same time. I don't really care for SPS that much and am goingto go LPS and maybe some softies. Anyhow, it's not much but it's mine and has no HA!

I know it's not much compared to many but I'm working on it!

Even less eye candy due to NOT cooking rocks and STILL blowing rocks every couple days which clogs a micron bag within 24 hrs. Contemplating total tank tear down, or 50%, and cook half at a time.

Marc, I meant the hypoxic denitrifying layers within the rock itself being disrupted by the jet of oxygen rich water pumped by the turkey baster or powerhead if it's placed in a hole or crack that goes deep into the rock. I think Weatherman cleared that up for me, but thanks for your reply anyways ;) Now keep the pics coming!!!!

I finally took my sand out about 2 months ago. The tank had been run with a very shallow sandbed and basically Barebottom methods(good flow, wet skimming, UV) For about 1 1/2 yrs. The nitrates had gradually crept up and so I just took the sand out.
Here is a side shot a couple of days after the switch:

Here it is a few weeks after that:

Another interesting note. I took my UV off today because I wanted to remove the wiper bar and because of heat issues( I want my chiller to run less, unsure if I will reinstall it). Anyway one of the reasons detractors say UV is uneffective is that the glass gets covered with algae and calcium deposits. I knew I was going to take it off when I got time so I intentionally didn't use the wiper bar for several weeks just to see what would happen.

As you can see the glass is totally clean. The only thing inside was a little rust where the bar goes in and out. I don't think much built up if any at all. Just a FWIW:)
