starry blenny

I just got one of these guys. I have *never* had such a hunt for a fish I'm trying to purchase. Took us over half a hour to nab this guy at the store.

He (who now bears the moniker "Houdini") is a charmer, however---very easily spooked, but absolutely driven to be where he can see what's going on. His color phases, which can change in a heartbeat, are: black with white stars on body, black cirri (eyebrows); pinto black with a white y on face and snow white Cirri and crest; mottled brown all over. He changes about as fast as a squid. VERY skilled jumper, and thank goodness at the store he simply landed in the adjacent tank...but definitely jump-guard with this guy.

He's a comb-tooth blenny, a rock-sucker, similar to a lawnmower blenny but with different coloring. Next morning he is eating enthusiastically on rock-surface.

I have had one for almost two years. It has taken this long for him to open up. He now comes to the front of the glass to see me for food. He used to be skittish and still will dart away and hide in a flash for seemingly no reason at all. He is out most of the time though and so much fun to watch.

He was 4" when I got him and is probably close to 5" now, maybe 4.5 +.

He's not a good algae eater believe it or not. He's very picky only eating film algae or very short stuff. He picks at the rocks and has green droppings so I know he's getting it in his diet but he doesn't keep the tank algae free by any means. I have removed a piece of rock from his tank and put it in another for the small Tangs I have. One Tang cleans off a small rock in a few hours.

He does eat anything I throw into the tank, even flake food which I rarely feed these days.

I have never witnessed him jumping.

He's probably my favorite fish and everyone that looks into the tank loves him. My son named him Rock Star since he looks like a rock and he's a 'Starry' Blenny.
