Ok, just looked up Octopus skimmers. There is a Recirc 150 for 180 gallons & a Recirc 200 for 300 gal. Any recommendations on a place to buy one?

The sump is drilled on the side about an inch up from the botton. so i figured i could put the sump up 10 inches higher than the fuge (i will have to take a chance and drill a hole in the 20 gal tank) and let the sump drain into it.

i have heard great things about ASM (All Seas Marine) Protein Skimmers the "G" series, probally 3 for you

I would like to start off right and buy equipment that would allow me to try anything once my tank is established and i have some experience. But for now soft corals & LPS. My fiancee is only letting me do this because i promised to let her get some clowns. So clowns, tangs, cardinals, maybe an eel. I used to have piranha so i am not really looking to do really agressive fish again, too much maintenance.

I think you looked at something wrong..

Do your homework.

If you err when buying a skimmer, err to the large side. You won't regret it.

Do more research in flow. You're going to have a small sump and fuge so you won't need a huge pump to move water through them but you will want some powerheads to keep it moving in your tank.

Be patient and do it right the first time.

eels love $25.00 clowns, they prefer them actully to other food,
sounds like you are doing the right things and asking the right questions,
my recomendation is keep it simple and since you have had tanks before u probally know allow for growth of equipment, don't let it get to cramped to fast.

I wouldn't go with the G-3 on a 125...I have a G-2 on my 72 and looked at the G4x for the 120 but I ended up going with the Euro-Reef

The problem with the recirc. (which in my opinion is a huge downside) is the footprint of them.

But, if I were you and had a "fish room" go with a large sump. Why not?

The foot print of the sump is the normal 20 g size but the corral for the bio media is right in the middle. thereefstop says the foot print of the asm is 11x12 and it is an in sump model. it wont fit because of the sump layout. unless i put it in the fuge...

Live rock is your bio-media don't use anything else. No bio-balls or bio-bale or sponges, they aren't needed and you will spend too much time cleaning them to keep them from releasing excess nitrates back into the system.

Can you make the Fuge tank the sump, and the sump tank the Fuge? You really don't want the skimmer in the Fuge..

I could probably find a cheap 55 somewhere. and silicone in some baffles and what not. I just need to get the thing cycling. I can use a big rubbermaid or something at first.

I agree your rock will be your main source for filtering the water.

Does it take long for the live rock to build up the bacteria the tank needs? Im going to buy my LR at gateway, $4 a pound-cured.
