Starting a 180, initial progress

Good decision on the basement sump. This will help keep noise down somewhat, and also give you more room to play around.

Looking good so far. This will be exciting to watch the progression of the build, from the back of your truck to the finished design.Keep us posted!!!!

Made some progress since my last update.

~ Ordered the glass for the DIY Overflow box. That should be here before the weekend.

~ Cleaned some of the basement where the Sump will be located. Have a lot more cleaning to do.

~ Below is the first Savko shipment. I expect to need to place another order when I get a better handle on the Sump layout.

Weekend Update!!

Man, having 3 kids keeps me running around like crazy. Most of the work shown below was done after 10pm or squeezed in between baseball, soccer, etc. events.

My plan is to work on the stand this weekend, again between baseball, soccer, etc. I think family is the reason tank builds take so long.

Anyway, on to the pictures.

Picked up the Glass for the DIY overflow box on Friday and put it together Friday night. Sorry the picture's a little fuzzy.

Progress continues!!

I know it's been a while since I've posted an update. I have been working, just not necessarily working fast.

It took me a lot longer to clean/organize the basement than I anticipated. I had to move a couple shelving units and all the contents. Once that was done, I wall mounted my RO/DI unit and positioned the freshwater and saltwater storage containers.

This week I built, primed, painted and setup a shelf to hold the sump and refugium. The refugium is a 30 long (breeder) that I drilled for a drain into the sump and the sump is the DIY acrylic sump I used on my 120.

Looks like I will have some free time this weekend so I am starting the stand. I have the lumber, just need some time.

Shelf with refugium on the top and sump on the bottom.

Lookin' good!

You sound like me: When I have the time, I don't have the money; when I have the money, I don't have the time!

I'm looking forward to seeing the display set up.

Love the pics of your progress Chris! It definately helps out some of us planning basement sumps in the future.

Keep us updated ok? : )

Nice shelf unit.

I stopped by Chris' to see what he was doing...his 300g rubbermaid reef looks incredible so the 180 he is putting between the dining room and tv room will be even better with glass sides :)

Yeah, I can't wait to see the tank when t omes back online. Chris' was one of the first nice big home-tanks I've ever seen and really helped kick off my interest in this hobby. Lookin forward to it being done. I'm also looking forward to finishing my own system :). I too work when I have time which means slow :D

Boy have I been busy!!! Unfortunately most of that busy time was not spent working on the tank. :(

Progress on the Stand. The stand will be 42" tall. This is mainly due to the fact that the tank will divide two rooms. The tank will be located in the lower of the two rooms which is about 8" lower.

I used all 2x4's. Each corner is three 2x4's glued and screwed together.

There is also a pair of 2x4's in the center for additional support. The whole stand will be covered in 1/4" plywood (glued and screwed) for strength. This picture shows the back and peninsula side complete.

From the front you can see the two openings. These will be better framed and have removable panels. I decided not to use doors as I will not be in there too often. The side facing the wall is also open as no one will see that side.

Current status of the stand. All framing is complete and all sides, top and bottom has been covered in plywood.

I've started to do a lot of routing for the trim. None of it looks exciting, so there aren't any pictures.

Setback!!
About a week ago, I had added a couple bulkheads to the sump for extra drains. One of the bulkheads must have been over tightened, causing the acrylic to crack.
100_0481.jpg

I added an acrylic patch and used plenty of Weld-on 16. I will water test it later this week.

Another positive note, I have had some great growth in the 6 months that the contents have been in the Tub. Sorry, can only take top down pictures, so some of these are not the greatest.

Stand is looking good, your rubbermaid replacement still looks awesome.

Your patch does not seem to cover the crack in the acrylic, did it expand after you made the patch?

I inadvertently put the patch on upside down and did not realize it until I posted the pictures. I put some extra weld-on 16 over the crack that was still exposed.

Everything thing looking good so far.

its going tobe pressing you that you have so much large tank build competition going on right now.
