Starting a new 90 Progress will be updated

We have very similar tanks--same high tank, canopy and stand---I notice you have gone with T'5 while I have gone with twin 150 watt halides. This is as high as I could go do to concerns about heating up the canopy to the point of a fire problem. Even with the 150 watts we had to drill two 4 inch holes in the top of the canopy.
What is the break down in the T'5 you are running as I am into a real delima as to trade out the halides when the bulbs are due for a change.
The halides just don't penetrate far enough into the tank for me to raise the beautiful corals you have.

Thanks---gorgeous house and backyard by the way

Thanks

I purchased the IceCap retrofit from Reefgeef. I am running IceCap Ballasts to overdrive the 6 T5s. I have a 660 running the middle 4 and a 430 running the outside two. the outside two come one at dawn and dusk. I have 4 92 mm fans blowing in from the back. Page 2 of this thread starts the light build. My tank temp stays between 80 and 81 with the house AC at 80.

Currently I am running the following lamps.

Front
UVL Super Actinic
ATI Blue Plus
UVL Aquasun
ATI Blue Plus
UVL 75/25
ATI Blue Plus

Here are the PAR number for the above lamps in the same order.

PAR
210
311
345
311
320
311

I started with

UVL Super Actinic
ATI Aquablue
UVL Aquasun
ATI Blue Plus
UVL Aquablue
ATI Blue Plus

And am thinking of changing back. The current setup has a lot of blue.

Where did you get him from?

LiveAquarium.com. I had to wait for a long time as they are pretty hard to find. You won't be able to find it without entering a search for the name.

My latest additions.

Today I broke down and installed the VorTech MP40W Propeller Pump w/ Wireless Controller. I ordered two with the battery backup but one of them and the battery backup are backordered until next week.

So with only having one to work with I decided to see how it worked.

Vortech.jpg

Initial installation and setup are very easy but there is no real instructions on how to dial in the proper pulse speed once you select the mode you want to use.

To set it up I started with the flow set to the maximum (mainly because I only have one) and on short pulse mode. After the max speed and mode are set I turned down the pulse speed to the lowest level and turned it slowly faster and waited between each setting to see if a wave started. It didn't take to long to get a wave motion once you get the pulse frequency correct.

Using one does produce a wave motion but the current is too low with so I'll keep in running until I get the other in next week.

The noise isn't bad but not completely quiet.

The fish were freaking out with the new water motion (except the clowns they went surfing). The LPS perked up almost immediately and looked as if they really liked the alternating motion.

Below is after only a half hour of running. Of course you can't see the motion but they are open more than usual.

Pretty much all the vendors sell one MP40W for $419 with a combo deal (not really much of a deal) for two and a battery backup for $970 to $990. Several vendors are out of stock. The battery backup goes from $149 to $169 if purchased separately. The motor gets really hot but the nice thing is the motor is outside of the water.

Flow rate is 500 to 3000 gph for each pump.

Flow: 500-3,000gph
Power: 12-40W
Maximum Motor Temp: 50-60 degrees C
For use with aquarium thickness from 3/16" to 3/4"

There is a MP20W but it's only rated for up to 70 gal. 500 to 2,000 gph.

Well after a few hours of running in short pulse mode the motor is extremely hot. Much hotter than the 140 F it specs.

I have now set the mode to Reef Crest Random to see how this works.

Congrats on the Vortechs! From your pic it looks like you got the new gen2 pump (these are stll fairly new, have to be careful you don't get an old gen1 to clear out stock). Make sure you other one has the same looking wet side base plate (red ring is not visible) and that you have a long pulse mode (pink).

Your method for generating a wave is correct. Also, as you already found out, if you run it max in short pulse mode, it will get very hot. You can tone it down to about 80% and it should decrease the temp alot and still make a nice wave.

I change up the modes all the time to mix up the flow patterns. It will also be totally different when you get your second pump.

Welcome to the club!

Thanks

The second is coming direct from EcoTech so it will be a Gen 2. MarineDepot was back ordered and had one shipped direct.

Yeah I figure with two I will have to tone it down a bit which will allow the motor to run cooler.

I have tried all the modes so far this evening trying to see what works best. The jury is still out. All of the modes slightly move just the very top layer of substrate without making any mounds or sand storms.

Its fun to watch the clowns riding the current.

I have to remember to set the night mode tonight. Do you know if night mode still kicks in even if you change the modes around after it's set?

Just read your entire thread, great detail on your methodology of entire process throughout! Beautiful set-up & livestock!

I haven't used the night mode yet. As I understand it, it will just cut power to 50% of whatever you have it set to, and run constant at that speed. Doesn't matter what mode you're in. I don't like the constant mode so I usually just manually change the mode to something more mellow when I go to bed and change back to more aggresive in the morning. I don't really lower the speed much though. I usually just do something like reef crest in anti synch mode.

bare with me on the ignorance of these pumps but I am very interested

can you vary or set the flow on these between 500 and 3000 gph?

If possible can you post a tank shot with the placement of the vortech?

When setting up the mode you want to use you turn a pot to set the maximum flow which is between 500 and 3000 gph. The programing will then run the pump from 0% to 100% of the max setting you programmed.

Below is the programming page that shows the type of flow for each program setting.

I am currently running in Reef Crest mode until the second pump arrives.

Here is how I have it positioned. The power line will be secured across the top after I have the second one installed and make sure I have it positioned where I want it.

When I get the second one it will be directly opposite of the first. The first will operate as the master pump and it will communicate (wirelessly) to the second (slave) pump. The slave will be 180 degrees out of phase as the first (anti-sync) to create the opposite motion on the right side of the tank. You can also put both on the same side and "Sync" them to run identical.

Dano, Can I move in? :D

Gorgeous house! I need to get a job in your industry. :) Tank is looking AMAZING, as well.
