Starting an interactive reef - 265g reef tank w/ live web camera

And here are some shots of the corals in my tank:

The corals are seeing great growth. I have more SPS in the tank but for some reason I missed them when I was taking pictures. I will get some more posted when I revisit my aquascaping and post a full tank shot.

Yay! An update with pictures and everything. The corals look great, and your pictures look sharp, especially the last one of the hammer.

I like the framed pictures idea. You're brilliant, you know that right? ;)

A couple of more that I overlooked on my SD card:

Awe shucks! :o I didn't even use that awesome photo box I got from you!

I need to work a little more on the focus. A few of the shots were a little off on what I wanted to be in focus. I wanted to get something up so I didn't spend too much time on them.

This is the pan/tilt/zoom camera I will have on the system.

The original camera we used years ago was a Sony PTZ camera with an Axis video server connected to it. The video server's frame rate was slow (2-3 frames a second), the image quality wasn’t great and the image size was something like 320x240. Not bad for 1999 but not acceptable for today’s broadband viewers.

This model (the Axis 213 PX) can run at 30 FPS at 704x480 and has a 26x optical zoom. We will be able to zoom in and see the details on the corals.

I have a webcam on my tank too. I have a Panasonic webcam that I am really happy with. It doesn't zoom in, but I am very happy with the quality. It also allows you to have your own webpage and allows different users to have different levels of access to the camera features.

any updates ?
Lots of updates, I just need to post them here! :)

I broke down my home tank and combined it with the 265 as I upgrade the home tank to something bigger.

The camera is mounted and working, although I haven't exposed the stream to a public IP address. The quality is incredible when I hit the camera directly but I want to bounce the stream through a media server so more than one person can watch it at a time.

Ironically I got a sweet deal on a 700 gallon tank so I just broke down the 180 office tank and will be shuffling things around over the next 1-2 months. The 265 will go where the 180 was and the 700 will go where the 265 is sitting now. You can read about it on the build thread I started here.

Both tanks will be viewable from the same web camera, although I will probably get a second camera at some point so both can be viewed at the same time.

I'll see if I can get some photos taken and posted early next week.

Later!

Love that mini-rack for your switch boxes. Can you pls let us know where you got it? Thx.
Thanks. I got it online. I'll track down the web site when I get to the office on Monday.

Thanks. Definitely interested in getting one.
Also looking forward to that webcam. You've put in a ton of hard work.....and it shows. Nice setup!!

Hey Ed! I am upgrading the CCTV system at my store. Got a PowerEdge 1950 for the server, and using ZoneMinder. I also dropped in an Axis 240Q to bring the old bullets online, but man I cannot get ZM configured to pick them up. All is good on a direct feed to the 240Q, but I need it going through ZM for recording.

Have you worked with any of these?

OK - here are a couple of pictures of the mounted camera:

Here's a closeup of the camera with the bracket that attaches to a pipe that's attached to the ceiling.

and a shot behind where you can see it facing the tank:

I should have some time next week to get the camera stream public so others can check it out.

looks like you made the ceiling mount yourself? I am going to hit you up for info. as I am re-building my retail store system.

BTW, where did you get that sweet ventillation ducting?

This thread has been quiet since my time has been spent with an upgrade to this 265g system - a 700g MONSTER tank. I will try and keep both threads updated, although I might need to shift everything to the other thread since I will not have the 265g tank anymore. It will be a 700g interactive tank!

I don't recall posting anything, so I will add something new here. About four months ago I came across a deal on a used kiosk system. I got the deal from SkyBus Airlines, which was a low cost airline out of Columbus, Ohio that went out of business. These were used as self-check-in systems and I got a killer deal on a 17" touch-screen system:

Note the card reader, barcode & passport scanners. It also comes with a thermal printer I don't need and will be selling all these components on eBay.

Once everything is done with the 700g upgrade, I will strip out the touch screen and computer and mount this system in the wall next to the tank. It will provide an interactive experience for users that are looking at the tank in the office. That way they can learn about reef systems and also find out what corals/fish are in the tank. (I can't even keep them all straight) Most of the content will also be on a web site so people coming in to check out the live camera can do the same thing.

Later!

Thanks guys. I feel a little bad since the kiosk is almost brand new since SkyBus was only in business for less than a year. (OK, I don't feel too bad)

A guy in my reef club thinks he can design/fabricate a new metal enclosure at work so hopefully it will look REAL nice once it is completed.

I hope to have all the upgrades to the 700g done this month so I can shift my attention to this in April and get it installed by mid to late May. (half of April is shot with the kids' Spring break)

I am lucky I can turn on my computer in the morning much less orchestrate an interactive system that is both interactive on line and in person!

Sweet!
