Starting up my JBJ 12g Nano Cube again

Wow....I've had cyano, bubble, diatoms..but not hair....I hope it stays away. SH

 Yes,well, I'm hoping that it does not last very long.... But like I said in the posting above, I'm in no hurry to populate this tank and before I add anything like corals and such, I'll make sure the algae is gone first... My next purchase is going to be the SL crab....

How do you beat the heat on this tank? My temps gets up to 86 if I don't keep the lid open. I got rid of the stock pump and have a maxijet 600. I still don't see any change in the temp. At night it constantly runs around 82.

I'm not sure if it's just the location or the room that the tank is in... But it's stayed pretty constant at 81 degrees... I've got it in my home office and it's in the lower portion of the house... actually on of the coolest rooms in the house ... I guess I just lucked out...

I"d avoid that SL crab if I were you.....not totally reef safe. JMO. SH

What would you recommend then for algae removal in this size tank ... I really don't want a million snails in there....

Bob

I'm not sure ANY crab is '100%' safe in a nano tank. I've just read lots of negative posts about SLF's with regards to corals. I have 2 emeralds in mine and they have eaten the bubble algae. I don't have experience with them with regards to hair. Don't laugh, but, if someone could lend you a tang, they supposedly eat it. One reefer on another forum had almost overnite success eradicating the hair algae with a UV sterilizer. Why or how? I don't know. The best thing tho' is to minimize nutrient input, improve nutrient export and make sure no phosphorus is getting in there. SH

I was just looking around and I think the "scarlet reef hermit crab" sounds like my best bet....

And SH.... You're right about other crabs not being 100% reef safe..Most of what I read stated that they are opportunistic feeders and if they don't have enough algae, will go after other "meaty" foods or attack some corals... ( not a good idea ) at least in my small reef tank....

Thanks for the help and advice..

Took some readings for the first time..... Ammonia = 0 Nitrates = 0.. Things are looking good ...I'll start adding some more cleanups ( for the algae ) next week... Going slow and steady...

Bob

Just thought I'd update by showing how the tank looks after "trimming" the hedge..... ( algae ) Actually, I pulled it up in a sheet like carpeting.... "But.. whatever works eh..??"

Finally added some "life" to my tank after 3 weeks running with just the LR and a few snails, I decided to transfer some mushrooms from my 150gal ( they were getting too much flow ) and a rock with some christmas tree worms ( which i think I may have lost one or two ) into this tank... Now I "just" added them and they are not opened up yet... Let me know what you all think ....

The "shrooms" must like the new surroundings. After about an hour, they have completely opened up....

I've also noticed that I still have about three of the worms left ... but they are not staying open long enough to get a good shot yet...

Looks good..still a bit of hair, but, much less. WTG. SH

 Thanks.... Yea that last tuft is being eaten as I type this... I took some of the turbos out so that the other's will not starve... I put the other ones in the 37gal fuge to control some algae there... I've also noticed that I've got more of the Christmas Tree worms than I first thought.... So all seems to be on track....

Some updates.... Finally going to add more "life" to this tank.... It's more than ready for it... Coraline is growing fantastically and the whole system is stable....

1 Nano Soft Coral Pack
1 Gold/Orange Ricordia Mushroom
1 Hawaiien feather duster
1 Blood red Fire shrimp
1 sm Royal Gramma
1 Six Line Wrasse

All should be here Sat. ( order going in Friday morn. )

have you had any cracking problems with the nano cube by JBJ? its glass right? and if it is, how thin is the glass?

Not sure of the thickness but it's a very sturdy tank... No cracks and no issues with it at all.... I think the 24gal JBJ's had issues with the glass but not the 12's
