stinky nori clip

I've noticed lately that when I replenish the nori sheet, the clip STINKS (the nori itself smells fine coming out of the sealed bag). The clip didn't used to smell like this. I've also noticed my tang and blenny don't eat nearly as much of it. I've been using Julian Sprung's nori, which they used to devour. Is it possible they are shying away from the nori because the clip smells rotten??

It may be confusing the fish. I'd try giving the clip a vinegar bath overnight and see if that clears the smell.

Nori smells terrible once it is wet for 24 hours. It goes bad quickly and shod be replaced often if not eaten. We bleach the clips and then prime (dechlorinate) several times a week and run a paper towel through them to wipe them down on days they don't get washed.

I have a clip that became "inaccessible" in my tank too, now I just use small rocks and rubber bands.

it was truly shocking to me how rancid that stuff smells. at least it's not like pe mysis where the smell lingers on your fingers for days at a time.

when i change my nori i usually just take a paper towel, open the clip up, and wipe out any leftovers that were stuck under the clip.

Just cut the Nori into small 1/8" x 1/8" pieces and feed it like you would flake food. Problem solved.
You might want to soak the pieces in a cup of water for a few minutes beforehand though. This will soften them up a little and keep them from floating into the overflow.

I think bleaching the clips is a wise idea as the bacteria lingering behind could possibly give the rotting process a jumpstart on a the new piece of nori. Just speculation though.

That's what we started doing, too. For bigger Tangs especially...they just pull it off anyway and putting my arm in the tank is something I try to avoid along with having to remove the jump guard every day. Its also a good way to use Selcon by soaking the nori.

I bleached the clip last night and now the smell is gone. Hopefully today their appetite is better.

make sure you rinse good to the bleach out. I always let it soak in some Prime and RO water for a little bit before going back into the tank.
