I've decided to dry plumb my return pump. It will allow me to eliminate the need for a separate pump from my sump to the fuge and I may even be able to feed my Ca Reactor. Two less wires and more room in the sump! Going to try to get this done today.
Sicce Syncra "Silent" my great big fat tushy. The thing sounds like a buzz saw. Sitting on a mouse pad. No air, perfectly clean. GRRRRRRRR! Add to that my return bulkhead is still leaking and I'm back to the drawing board. Any suggestions for a truly silent pump??
Unfortunately, the noise is coming directly from the pump. I may just have a bad one but it is so annoying. Oh well. Think I'm going to switch to a DC pump.
Well, I ordered a new pump. I'm going to take one more shot at the Sicce (but stepping down from the 5 to the 4) since it will fit the existing plumbing. The bulkhead leak is super slow and may even be slowing down or stopping so I'm going to let it run a bit longer to see what happens. I'd bet that saltcreep would eventually stop it but if it's not dead dry, I'm going to pull it.
Otherwise, the plumbing is lead free and very accessible. New pump comes Wednesday so that's how long the leak has to stop. Already have a new bulkhead ready to go.
Here's a shot of the final plumbing. I'm really pleased with the outcome. The main pump now feeds the tank, the fuge and once hooked up, the CA reactor. So I went from four pumps to one with this design. The new Sicce is quiet although 'silent' is a major overstatement. I've installed ball valves just about everywhere I could think of and the pump sits between two true unions for easy maintenance. I've now got to clean up the wiring since I had to redo a few things to accomodate the plumbing but overall, the really heavy lifting is done.
Updated the Apex controller to the new software. It was a breeze as was getting the wireless up and running. The return and flow pumps are all now on the Apex. I have the Tunze to Apex cables if I want to do something fun but frankly, I don't see a need to ramp them up and down. That's what the MP40 is for and the last thing I want is three more wires.
I'll be installing the heater and the fuge light tomorrow (although the need for a fuge is a little way off yet).
Unfortunately, there's still way to many outlets to fill. In addition to the heater and fuge light, there is still the Ca reactor (two outlets, one for recirc pump and one for regulator) and skimmer. Then there are four outlets for the lights. Still, making progress.
In an endeavor to slightly modify the plumbing from my fuge to the sump, my hand slipped and cracked the fuge.
The good news is that it didn't leak and I was able to pump the water out. Since it's only a 10 gallon fuge, I'll worry about it after I get everything else up and running.
Ryan has said that reef keeping is like a boxing match. Just gotta keep taking those punches. I'm going to put a bag of frozen peas on my left eye.
