Storm in Yosemite

Drove to Yosemite NP 2 weeks ago, and I thought I picked the wrong day to shoot! There was a storm brewing and it rained+snowed the whole day. My gear got literally soaked but (fortunately) continued to work. One good thing came out of it though: It was a Memorial Day weekend and the park was almost empty! Apparently, the weather forecast turned away most of the tourists and I was able to leave the park in 10 minutes! No traffic at all :strange:

These were all shot in the rain. Imagine having to wipe each filter dry after every exposure. (NOT fun!)

#1 - The obligatory Tunnel View with a storm brewing in the horizon

#2 - Closeup of Bridalveil Falls, shot with the 70-200 VR2.

#3 - Lower Yosemite Falls, shot with the 16-35 /4. A difficult one to shoot because of mist and rain

#4 - backflow

#5 - I'm not sure which waterfall this is... Bridalveil? Sentinel? Maybe Doug can help

#6 - Closeup of Yosemite Falls, shot right in front of the Ansel Adams gallery

#7 - Another one...

Thanks for looking :)

Those pics are AMAZING. I really need to take some photography classes. I bought my NIKON D60 DSLR and thought about it but now I'm inspired.

Very nice. I like the first image with the dark brooding sky, pretty cool.

I need to get there someday and take some attempts at good photography :)

Really beautiful. Which lens in #5??? That's a great shot. I'm thinking the 16-35??? They're all really sweet, but I can't get #5 out of my noggin!!!!

Thanks All for the kind words. #5 was shot with Nikon 16-35 (19mm, 30 sec at f/11). I used a Lee big stopper, Hitech 3 stop soft GND, and cokin 81EF stacked on a Lee foundation kit. The big stopper has a magenta cast when used alone and the 81EF warming filter helps bring the warmth back. The GND was used to preserve highlights of the sky.

I live and work just outside of Yosemite, I see way to much "wanabe Ansel Adams" photos in every restaurant and "gift shop" around town. You on the other hand took some amazing shots. My wife's first husband was a studio photographer and she is very hard to impress, she asked if you were going to be selling prints! And this Memorial Day was wonderful this year without all the tourists.

Again, thank you all for the kind words. I appreciate it :)

philshel, I don't sell any of my work. It's just a hobby for me at the moment and I'm happy to just share it with everyone. Thanks!

Beautiful work!! I admire people who have an eye for photography because it does show. Clearly you have that remarkable, keen "eye" as my sister tells me because she too was told she has that remarkable, keen "eye" for photography.

Thanks for sharing! I've been to Yosemite twice. Once as a teenager, and a second time for a honeymoon trip (along with Napa valley). It has to be one of my favorite national parks. Love the place. Plan to take my 6yo son there someday when he gets a bit older... and on that trip, we are going to spend a big chunk of time there hiking/camping.

nice shooting snd post processing. I especially like the last one. It really gives off that feeling of depth. Overcast light can be the bomb if you're in the right environment to make use of it!
