Storytime again for us fish nerds... Southern Japan and Guam dive/fish trip 2012 :)

Some local kids had a tent set up... and had tape for my finger so I could stop the bleeding and get back in the water...

Some of the other fish I caught... with hopes of bringing home... but I didn't have the room... so I bagged them up and released them before leaving the island...

What a beautiful island... here is a shot of Tumon Bay after a hike to Two Lover's Point...

It's tough to work there... when this is the view from the parking lot where I work...

Awesome update! Must be incredible to be able to collect your own fish and view them in the privacy of your own home. So cool, John!

Great update John, I was gonna catch you at reefstock but got distracted. Love the scopas hybrid, got any more pics?

Yes... I'll get around to more... :)

I your friend running a collecting staion there?
Have you gotten the info i asked you about?

No... there is really no collection station there... he collects locally for his shop and some service accounts... it's not really worth it to set up a location there as the only thing relatively shallow and unique is Centropyge shepardi... many other species are found in places where the labor and cost of living is much cheaper... I'll get back to you tomorrow on your email...

Hafa Adai John!

I always love reading and learning from your posts. This one was especially nice as it brought back many fond memories from working in Guam. I spent 3 months there along with Rota and Saipan following Super Typhoon Pongsona.

When I finally got some time off we would shore snorkel at Gabgab and a few other spots the locals told us about. Actually there was even decent snorkeling right on Tumon not too far from the Hilton.....the typhoon had caused a lull in the tourist traffic from Japan so the beaches were not crowded at all.

Fortunately I was never on the wrong end of an eel but I did get my swim fins nipped by an impatient Huma Trigger over by the underwater observation station....think it was called Fish Eye.

Anyhow thanks again for another great read!

juvi emperor is amazing...the circle is so prominent....
also i see streamer beginning at the end of dorsal fin in adult emperor...a type specific to pacific emperor....why we don't see them much in hobby....plus full coloration in such size....!

what a fulfilling life you are living..

I was hoping for a second juvie... I chased one in a hole and was blindly reaching for it when WHAM... I got tagged by an eel... pure overconfidence... that emperor got away... :)

So if we find the rest of your thumb we call 671.....?

I'm confused :lolspin::lolspin:

20 odd years ago, while working at a LFS while in high school, I had the same thing happen.......your photo-docs always want to make me buy a sailboat and hang up the 9-5. Keep it up.

Hi John. I appreciate the pictures you posted of Guam and especially Apra Harbor. I am currently living on Guam (a native) and posted a link (to my facebook page, Guam Is Not A Country) to your post about how your grandfather was killed in WWII and your dad was here on Guam before you were born. I got to your post by typing in "Guam nerds" on the Google search bar. I'm glad you have enjoyed your visits to Guam.
