Striped Cardinal macro pic w/eggs

I have watched my two striped cardinals doing the mating dance for weeks but only today did I notice the male had a mouthful of eggs.

Here is a pic I just took.

CardinalEggs.jpg

I have been out of town for a couple days so not sure when the eggs were laid. I have a 34 gal tank with only coral that I hope to use to rear them. I have found info on Banggai Cardinal rearing but not Striped. I am assuming the Striped Cardinal will be very similar. Does anyone have experience with rearing Striped Cardinals?

I am not sure how to catch the proud father. Since he is not eating, he won't go into a trap. My DT has a lot of rock in 175g so I don't think I can net him. Any ideas or should I just try to catch the fry after they are released?

I have two Koralia 2s in my 34G. Will the fry get sucked in or can they swim well enough to stay away? I may move my frags out and turn off the Koralias.

if you chase or trap him most likely he will spit the eggs...i dont know much on the striped ones but i would think a larval snagger/trap would work great

AWSOME PIC BY THE WAY

all apogons, except banggais release planktonic fry between days 7-10, so they are quite different than banngais

Thanks for the info. Can you point me to a source for more info on this species?

If they only keep the eggs/fry for 7-10 days then I assume they are much less developed than Banggais when released. Does that mean they can't eat newly hatched brine shrimp?

seaguyy-- my statement above is accurate- at days 7-10 they release planktonic fry, yes much less developed than banggais. Also remember that banggais have whats called "direct development" they skip over any planktonic phase.

W/ all apogons except banggais will you will need to capture the planktonic fry, isolate them in a small grow out tank and feed enriched rotifers. A few species of apogons (deopends on howsmall their larvae are) may even require smaller foods.

As for a reference to find more information. purchase Matt Wittenrichs book "illustrated marine breeding" or do a google search- theres breeeding info on MOFIB about these fish
