Suddenly eggs

I still have 12 juvenile clowns. They are as cute as can be.

On the other hand, I have a huge number of larvae. The larvae hatched all at once on Sunday and my collector worked really well. They are doing very well this time in my 5.5 gallon tank filled only about 1/2 full with phytoplankton rich water. The rotifer count is actually rather low this time since babies are eating well. No O2 issue so far. They all have the full tummies silver colored with rotifers. I am hoping that I can keep the rotifer counts high enough for the larvae for just another two days.

The babies are 2-1/2 days old now. Some of them start eating bbs when they become 4 days old. I need to have enough rotifers to sustain them till then.

Spirulina is a type of marine algae. Spirulina is an old name. They are supposedly reclassified into a type of cyanobacteria. Some people use them for growing brine shrimp to adulthood. It's also considered a health food supplement to human, too.

I don't use spirulina, though.

You're welcome. It took mine about three years to start spawning. It may be awhile before yours do, but it's certainly worth waiting for.

If you are interested in breeding clownfish, you should get hold of the book called Clownfishes by Joyce Wilkerson.

An update on the new batch of larvae. Here are a couple of pictures:

See the big tummies on these guys? I am doing my best to keep rotifers coming. I sure hope they will eat those brine shrimp soon. I am afraid that I am co-culturing bbs with my fry at the moment.

I'm tagging along as this is a great thread. Congratulations on raising the first ones to what looks like healthy fish.
Couple of questions.
  1. Do you intend to put them all in your 120 or sell/give to fellow reefers?
  2. Do you see this as a possible small business opportunity? These are very popular fish and I'm sure there is a market for them in your LFSs.

I intend to sell some to my LFS's and give some away for good cause such as school projects, etc. I bred Banggai cardinalfish earlier this year and that's what I did with the offspring.

There is a small market here for captive bred fish. However, the local market is not big enough for making money beyond recouping the cost of breeding and raising.

There are a number of people who raise and sell clownfish. There is a couple of forums dedicated for people who breed marine ornamental fish for fun and for business. According to a number of people on those forum, breeding marine ornamental fish is a very rewarding hobby but not a profitable one in most cases.

I used to breed fancy fresh water angelfish for fun. It was fun and profitable enough to pay all my expenses of breeding and raising my fish plus some extra. I got out of it because it became more of a chore than fun eventually. I have known a professional breeder in the area and also belong to FW fish breeders societies as well. With the advances of Live Aquaria and other online shops, a lot of them went out of business, though.

Hope this addresses some of your questions.

Truely amazing, I love your threads, the best read I have had on here in some time. Matt Canaberry 'SP' around Knoxville breeds and may be interested in some I would think. I suppose at least you could always trade off for equipment/coral. I love the pictures and the success.

Thank you, Brad. I am having a lot of fun with breeding them. I have met Matt/Sustainable Aquatics in the regional frag swaps a few times. He and his family are really nice.

Some from the first batch are about an inch long now. I will probably hold onto them for another three or so weeks until they are about three months old. I may let them go sooner if they start getting scrappy.

Here are a couple of more pictures of new larvae from last night. Not the best pictures, but they show what happens when they got through metamorphosis. A bunch of them are suddenly congregating on the bottom of the tank under the heater hiding.

I think I have a rather laid back pair of clownfish.

I started feeding my fish not knowing my clownfish pair was right in the middle of spawning. While the pair was eating, I found that they had eggs. Then, they resumed spawning after they finished their meal.:hmm3:

Here's a video of their spawning. You can hear TV talking about tonight's Olympic games in the background:

The pair stopped laying eggs after the move to my 180. They just started laying eggs again a little while ago.
 
Congrats on the baby's. I am on this thread because three days ago I found eggs in my 120 as well. I too cant tell if my fish are Percula's or Ocellaris. I believe today is day four in their development.
Here is my timeline. Sat-Found a Damsel on the floor(could be coincidence or protective parents guarding the nest)Sun-Noticed the eggs on my overflow wall.Mon-Eggs are still orange. Tues Eggs are brown in color. Today I set up a 5 gallon with heater, Black construction paper on the outside and white paper underneath, and a small 9w compact flourescent light. I expect i will be able to see eyes in the eggs in the near future. Just setting up the nursery and hoping for the best
