One thing that seems clear to me, most everyone thinks (at some time or another) that "cooking" rocks means to heat them the first time they hear it.

lets call it something else: how about "re-curing rock"

Here's why. "cooking" means:

to prepare food by applying heat
to prepare or treat by heating
to falsify or alter

"to alter" is close, but what the process resembles to me both in method and goal is the curing of live rock.

So why call it cooking?

I agree with you in that "cooking" is not an optimal term.
But curing isn't right either.
We can come up with something new like...Darkened Natural Rock Cleansing lol

I think its very obvious what 'Cooking " means after I read the first post of the cooking procedure. Its mostly the people who would rathetr make negative comments on the subject before reading the entire threads about it that dont understand what it realy is.I dont have a problem with the term COOKING...Maybe calling it=Cooking (Long Term Cureing In The Dark).Maybe this would be a better way of typing it so for those that dont want to actualy research it would have a better idea of what it means. Then go into what it actualy is and is doing to the rock from there.By the way.....I am getting very tired of the detritus thats still comeing off my rocks after basting daily that I put in my tank to cure when setting it up.I didnt read anything about cooking then or I would have definetly cooked them.

Boat, I'm glad it works for you, but I think you'd agree that the point of a name is to give a technique a short, descriptive handle, and cooking doesn't cut it for most.

Call it Fred if you like, that would be better because it would make ppl ask "What is Fred?" most ppl know the definition of cooking though.

Look at the original threads, Pages and pages of "what temperature"? posts you'll see Habib and Randy both couldn't figure it out at first. Are they part of some vast conspiracy to discredit the procedure? doubtful.

I think the term "cooking" is already dug in and changing it would be difficult.

However, "purging" may be an alternative, since you are driving out detritus and bound nutrient.
