Sulfur DeNitrators

I finally got the Sulfur De-Nitrifier unit circulating water properly. I installed an aqualifter pump on the input of the unit without a filter. the water line gets water from the sump, lifts it 2 feet and pumps it in the input of the unit. The output is adjusted by a needle in-line valve sourced at us_plastics.

After about a week of constant water circulation I have seen a large amount of bacteria growing on the sulfur media. the unit is dripping at about 5 drops per sec.

To my surprise, today I measured the tank nitrates and the reading was 5-10. Mind you, I started with a reading of 50+ and the only reason it stayed there was because I was changing at least 30 gal and sometimes 60 gal per week. Packer, I sympathize. I don't remember how long ago it was that I had a 10 or less nitrate reading. Maybe 2 years??? WOW.
I'll throw a party when my nitrates go down to zero... I can't wait... Everybody is invited!!! And yes, the unit works once you get the water circulation (Eheim pump) going good. But it took me 2 months to get it right! I'm a slow learner.

I do not have a R/O filter so I have been getting water from my LFS. They use r/o water and instant ocean salt, and sell it for about a dollar a gallon mixed. I would get six five gallon buckets every water change. That is how I came up with my cost for water.

Packer:

Put logic in the equation, $30.00 every time equals an R/O unit in 10 water changes, not to mention the cost of back surgery! Believe me I know an R/O unit is cheaper than surgery.
And how much was the DeNitrator?
Sound's like the cart was before the horse to me.

Sorry, but after owning horses for over 35 years I know better than to put the cart upfront. Yes, an r/o unit would be nice. Then all I would have to do is buy salt, mix it, aeriate it for 24 hours, and do the water change. That would reduce my nitrates a slight bit each change. Foget about the change in water chemistry stability-ph, ca,mg,salinity exactness, etc. And forget about the large water change shock to the corals. Wasnt it all worth it for the SLIGHT change in nitrates???? The reason behind this unit is NITRATE REDUCTION, not just water change problems. My nitrates are at about 5ppm right now. How much water would I have to change to get that from 50ppm??? My tank is looking awesome!! I still will do slight water changes but LOVE my nitrates at 5ppms and it does it while I sleep!

I am at the two month mark since installing it and it has kept the tank at zero since about day 27. Still has alot of calcium media in the unit so I have not had to add any, and basically the unit just does its thing, no maintenance to it at all. My Ca readings are steady at 420-450 with very little additions of turbo calc or seachem advantage calc. My sps corals are really showing the love of zero nitrates! All are putting on alot of growth, more in the last month than in the months prior (seemed to just sit there).

My 300 gal was always running at 50+ ppm in Nitraters and about 1 month after I installed the DeNitrifier they were lowered and kept between 2.5 and 5 ppm.
My goal is to take them down to zero, but it hasn't happened yet.
I installed the DeNitrifier In Apr/06. By May/06 the Nitrates were down to 2.5 - 5.0 ppm. And have stayed at that level since.

Hi there guys!!:)

I have a midwest sulfur denitrifier and I am very happy with it, very nice item. :D

But I have a little problem, I hope you can help me. ;)

I installed my Sulfur DeNITRIFIER more or less 3-4 weeks ago, the drip rate is 2-3 drops per second and now my nitrates are going down.

Well the problem is that before I installed the Sulfur DeNITRIFIER in my Reef Aquarium, my ORP was always in 380 - 400 and now after I installed the DeNITRIFIER my ORP is in 430-440 and I cant' down it less than that.

Anyone have the some problem ?

I am a little worried because of that  , what do u recommend to do ?

I will be waiting you nice help.

My ORP also went up after I installed the DiNitrifier. The water quality must be improving. A water change may also be timely.

Thank you very much skydancer and what about your Ph ?

Because I saw that maybe there is the problem, the water that exits my Sulfur Denitrifier have a Ph in 7 and because of that the Ph in my Aquarium is a little down, is in 8.00 !!

Yes I will do a water change only I am waiting all the replacements of my RO/DI that I hope I get this week from Premium Aquatics.

I would think some sort of daily buffer is in order to keep your PH up. Sulfer denitrater or not. I use baked, baking soda from Randy Farleys 2 part recipe daily. A water change will not affect the PH much I would think, just clean up the water a dab is all.

I did the fix for my problem my friends, in the zone that I drop the denitrifier is the exit of the water of my Euro-Reef recirculating skimmer and also I put a little skimmer in sump (ASM mini) and a little power head and with that I have a lot of movement there in that section of my sump so I fix my problem with the Ph that I had.

Set up my Denitrifier today. Anyone running a fluidized bed reactor to the Sulfur reactors return? Was thinking about a FBR with Rowa Phos being fed from the Sulfur reactor.
Got to go test my Nitrate level before I forget.

Wow, my new skimmer is doing a job, Nitrates between 5 and 10ppm. Well, I want to get to zero, so start the clock, and I guess my fish will eat good tonight.

I might worry about back pressue. Do you know how much output your sulfur reactors doing? I know my in my TLF Phosban Reactor filled with ROWAphos I am pushing in maybe max 100gpm.
Its nice knowing you can over feed just a bit and not have to worry to much. :)

Ordered my Sulfer Denitrifier just know after reading all these posts. I am horrible with water changes and feed my reef a LOT. Well mother in law usually does the LOT part. Can't tell her you only need a little pinch. Anyhoo, My nitrates are 100+ despite monthly water changes. I do have a wet/dry that is being replace by a very large sump that Melev is building for me. I am hoping I can put this unit right in Sump. Any one done this. I will report progress as she goes.
