Sulfur DeNitrators

Mine will be at the 1 week mark tomorrow, will test the effluent then and adjust flow rate accordingly. I did hook up a precision marine fluidized bed reactor with rowa phos to the return line from the sulphor denitrator, no problems doing that. I can see big improvent already with my sps, color and pe are much better and keep improving. Cyno still in spots in tank, but will need the denitrifier working before I can expect to see it die off.

Posted this in teh equipment forum but just wondering if anyone hear is using any of these denitrators:

H&S 150SR Nitrate Reactor ($459.99) from Aquarium Specialty - rated up to 500 gal.

Sulfur DeNITRIFIER XL ($439.95) from MidWestAquatic - rated 250g to 500g.

Korallin BioDenitrator S-3002 ($485.00) from MarineDepot - rated up to 400g.

Hi NexDog,

I have the Denitrifier from MidwestAquatic and absolutely is the best option in Denitrifiers my friend, very well manufactured, is like a Korallin but like recharged my friend jejeje with more quality, it is made in best materials and also the accesories(parts) like the John Guest Shut of Valves are much better than the Korallin, the Korallin have a very poor shut of valves and not only that the customer service is awesome.

In the Midwest site are also a forum for questions and help, so that is a plus too.

In few words this is the best option by far in Sulfur Reactors in price and everything, you can see it.

I put here images of my Sulfur Denitrifier.

Cheers.

Many thanks for the feedback. The MidWest unit is looking like a winner. Runs externally of the sump, I assume?

Cool, but I think I want to run it outside the sump. Not sure yet - hence would like run that can go in or out. :)

either way if the unit is not below the water source you will need a pump to get water into it - thats why many/maybe most run the tubes up to the aquarium

Hi Mr. Boyd.
Please re-download the manual.

well hooked mine up last night. Easy installation. Only thing I am scared of is how the hoses are hooked in. If for any reason the hose started to leak it would pump your aquarium onto your floor. Otherwise running fine. Nitrates are sky high 50+, Corals are sick and dying and undergoing cyano outbreak. SO things are bad. Hopefully after water change and this baby kicks in will have some healing. I will be running mine in sump due to fear of potential leak after Melev delivers it.

Thanks for the link...still wondering if anybody has gotten their hands on the actual media. Reason why I am asking is because I can get 99.99% pure granular sulfur (around 6mm) but it is soft in consistency and Im wondering if the commercial sulfur media is the same.

Bill

Bill,
Where can you get the round stuff? I have been looking for that for a DIY project. I found a German company that sells it, but they won't ship here?

Thanks.

sulfur pellets

sulfur pellets

Yeah, thanks. I saw that. But these are the standard pellets. Midwest says they are switching sulfur, because the little pellets get packed down.

So I was hoping Bill could point me to where he can get the bigger ones. I don't want to wait for MA to make the switch.

I know you can import them from Europe. But someone in the US must make them too.

It's in the message board.
Pretty soon, I guess.

Right now they are saying every few months,
when you get a lot of slime build up, rinse out the filter.

They have offered to send free media to current customers
when they get it in, but I don't know when it will be.

ANybody here use the ARM sulfur media. It's 100% elemental sulfur.

Yeah. That is just like the old Midwest stuff. It's not balls. It's like a small split pea. It works fine, but clogs up after a while. I think the balls are the way to go.

12 bucks a pound, though.

But no one in the US seems to make the balls. Just split pea. Midwest is having a ton shipped in from Europe. Which is why it is taking so long.

I hate to derail the thread a bit here, but has anyone who is now using the sulfur reactor ever tried the DSB bucket? I wonder if the same results can be achieved with a DSB bucket, but more than likely at a slower rate. I'm very intrigued by the reactor, however I just can't bring myself to justify spending the $450ish on the denitrator when my nitrates are only at 20ppm anyways, and the bucket is less than $20 and I don't need something thats super efficient.

Let me know what you guys think about my situation
BTW I'm running a mostly coral tank 120g, 3 fish.
