Sulfur DeNITRIFIER DIY!!!

didn't have alot of time to make a post. just got back in town. got to get to the wife.

tested nitrates. about two weeks running.

effluent - 0
tank nitrates - 15 (started at 30, was at 25 on the 16th) also on the 16th was when my effluent was >100. slowed rate to 30/min at that time.

my plan now is to slowly increase the rate of the drip week by week.

take care

Nice job! This weekend is the 2-week mark for me, so I'm going to test as well. I just wonder if having the flow-rate issues along with having to take the unit apart slowed down the seeding process...

i'll keep you guys updated. last night i increased the drip to about 40-50 per minute (just guessing). i was reading the last page of post and i did do one additional thing back on the 16th. i had the same ideal about adding a coil of line before the sulfur. i had built a coil denitrator a couple of years ago for a fowlr i had. i added about 8-10 ft of ro tubing to this unit. i had a small coil in the garage left over from my ro/di unit. this may of helped but the time frame is kind of short.

well you guys have a good christmas

I'd like to see how you are connecting 1/4" icemaker / RO tubing to your powerheads, please. That is always one of those little connections no-one showcases.

i used a 3/4" ro male adaptor and screwed it into 1/2" barb fitting with a female 3/4" thread. i used small caliber (i think 5/8" id - actually probably the size smaller) to fit onto a maxijet400. i had to boil the other end to stretch it enough to get over the 1/2" barb. it was a pain. i am away for christmas but i can try to take a pic when i get back. i got the parts from home depot.

Hmm. That sounds like it would work well. Getting any type of tubing to affix to a MaxiJet can be difficult. I didn't think about JG Fittings, but that would make it possible to disconnect it easily.

I hope you don't mind me tagging along.
Here is a pic of the reactor that I recently picked up from a local reefer. I was looking for tips on the install. What kind of pump would you run on this thing??
Thanks

Well, sorry but, in my case I'm not ;-)

At first I was siphon/gravity feeding the reactor from the main tank. So in that was all 1/4" tubing.

Now I'm tapping off of my main return pump. I bought a 3/4" barb 'Y', and glued a PVC cap on one end. Then I drilled a hole in that and glued a 1/4" barb fitting for the denitrator.

update:

tank nitrates - 5
effluent - 0

will cont to increase drip rate - now just shy of 60/min

thanks Hormigaquatica. haven't seen my tank in four days. the sps are more colorful today - deeper colors. my cup coral is fulling expanded as well as the elegance. i guess even running a tank with nitrates in the 20s had an effect on the tank. i never thought it was a big deal since i had growth but i stand corrected. this simple design with probably put the commercial units out of business.

take care

I wish my stuff would come in finally. Reading your experience is really extra encouraging. Can we see a picture of your setup?

Remember if you run sulphur to run it thru ARM to buffer the output and also try to run the output thru a skimmer prior to the tank to add O2 and raise the ph.

Also, sulfur denitrators tend to lower your kH. So watch it closely, as it will tend downward as the denitrator kicks in. I've had a Midwest Aquatics unit now since about March, and haven't had detectable nitrates since June. I've had to clean out my unit twice in this time, and I've ended up removing all but about an inch of the sulfur, as that is about all that is needed to keep my tank at 0 on a regular basis. Otherwise, it's been great.

hello guys, just ran into this post and wanted to share my experience with sulphur based denitrifiers, i build one myself out of a phosban reactor, no-no3 media from carib sea, mj1200 pump, 1/4 tubing and 1/4 ball valves, i let this thing run for 7 days getting nitrites and nitrates off the roof, ph was at 7.8, then after the break in period my trites and trates went to 0, i dropped my nitrate from 25ppm to 0 ppm in a month.

2 things to remember, at start up, send all the outflow from denitrifier to a bucket so you dont send anything you dont want into your tank and at first set the outflow of denitrifier at about a drop a second until the break in period is over you can increase the outflow

and now for the good part, here are some pictures.

here are the results

well just wanted to share, happy holidays

i'll try to take some pics today of the setup. is there anything particular you want me to get a shot of??

I'd like to see it all. Tubing, pump, how much tubing you used... the works buddy!

sorry for the delay marc. my father in law is in town and i am back at work. i'll try to get some pics tonight.

Great thread guys!

I'm planning to run one on a 65g that I'll be setting up in a month or 2.

Where are you getting your sulfur from? The only places I've found so far are Aquatic Eco-Systems and Marine Depot, any others?

Thanks.

Woohoo!!! My goodies arrived today, instead of Jan 2nd. UPS gets a  from me today. :)

ok that wasn't too hard.

the first pic is the two canisters. i hanged the sulfur container against the stand post. the argonite just sits in the stand. i eventually will add a carbon canister.

the second pic is how i connected to maxijet to the ro tubing. i used small caliber tubing (3/8") which i boiled to get over the 1/2" barb.

the last pic is the valve i used. i am just dripping the effluent over the filter sock for now. eventually i am going to put it into the ro fitting of the protein skimmer.

hope this helps

just for fun is a couple pics of the tank the denitrator is on.
