well I can't wait for summer, it will be so good for my tank. I have noticed that pH has been stable at 8.1 to 8.3 everyday since we've been able to keep the windows open all day.
additionally I finally realized that I am a TOTAL idiot...I placed my tank in a location that is great in summer but terrible in winter. why? because when the trees have leaves on them they block late day direct sun from blasting in the patio window right into the tank, but unfortunately all winter it has been getting massive amounts of natural light in addition to the MH's. For the life of me I could not nail down why I was getting such bad algea in the front of the tank, but now I think I have deduced it.
I looked at everything, phosphate, lowering nutrients, using carbon again, I even started to think maybe the small amount of precipitate from my kalk that was getting in with the top off was causing it, but extra light is the one thing that has definately changed since last fall. It's always the last thing you suspect.
